Its my first cable box so would prefer it to be plug & play, already 'fixed' if possible

    anybody have a recommendations?

I have seen the "Starview PVR 160GB Twin Tuner" which looks pretty good??

any idea where i could pick one up at a decent price?

    Welcome to the forum Ross!

Whatever box you buy, chances are that it won't be "fixed" and you will need to connect it to your PC to update the firmware. You will most likely need a null modem cable, you can get them from ebay for ?2.

    Other options:

    Eurovox EX5000-PVR
    Dreambox DM600-PVR
    Dreambox DM800HD-PVR

      Hi DevilFish,

How hard is it to "fix" them?

I worried about spending 200 quid and nackering it!

Where can i get one from? there used to be loads on ebay but now theres only a few?

totally agree. dreambox all the way.
on first impression, it can seem a bit daunting, but if you d/load the excellent dk v1.1 image from here, then you basically can't go wrong.
theres loads of step by step guides on here to get you up and running and loads of friendly, knowledgeable peeps to help you if you do get stuck.

                  Hi,
Whats the difference in the genuine and the clone?
obviously the clones wont be covered by warranty, but when you flash the reciever then surely even the genuine's warranty is void?

Personally I've found very little difference between clones and originals.

                      I now only buy clones.

Ross its all personal preference mate... But on a 600 i went genuine.. I prefer to buy genuine from Europe, Its just cos I would rather give my money to the original maunfacturers of the box to help them develop more boxes for our future enjoyment rather than some chinese sweatshop which has stolen somebodies design.

I can flash it back to the manufacturers image any time i wish and i feel i can better support for it should I need to. Not that anything has gone wrong, the box has been great.

When VM start going for more HD channels that are worth viewing (not just any old crap) i would consider Dm800 but for now the 600 is just perfect..

Very valiant of you Nige, but I buy what I can afford

There is an argument that if we continue to buy from DreamMultimedia, then they will continue to sell their kit at vastly inflated prices.

When clones first arrived on the scene, the price of the DM500 dropped considerably.
