the problem is now that the UK has to much of a reliance on the US for using its military might. with cutbacks continuing the way they are this reliance on Uncle Sam will only increase..

Yes it is. Stalin and Hitler were allies until Hitler decided to double-cross him.

Read up on the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact.

                not disputing any of that.

but i am disputing that they were pals.

most observers of that time agree that if the germans werent at war with the russians then they might well have won the war.

It certainly would of changed the outcome significantly with it being very likely that Britain would of been defeated. Its also quite likely both the US and Germany would of developed Nuclear weapons almost simultaneously, with Germany having an advantage as they were very close to a working fusion device plus a means of delivery (Rockets that could target New York from German launch sites). By comparison to the elegance of the proposed German weapons, the US nuclear devices were actually quite primitive, despite the money the US spent on their development.

By the time the war ended, Germany was shown to of been only months away from fusion weapons and may of actually had prototypes ready had it not been for action taken by assorted spies, resistance fighters and the RAF. The prototype delivery system was certainly ready and, after the war, went on to form the basis of both the US/USSR missile delivery systems.

Strangely enough, if it hadn't of been for the Russians tenacity in defending their own soil, then it may well of been the US that faced the horrors described in the first post and very probably launched from sites in the UK.

                  Makes you wonder, doesn't it..........
