It's illegal for an employer to sack an employee while they're out sick, so if you have to go out with your back, do so without fear of being sacked. If it's bad, you might qualify for DLA. Contact CAB for advice.

There ARE jobs out there. It's all about perseverance. You'll touch for one eventually. Consider doing some courses at your local tech. Also, why not save up and do your LGV licence, or even PSV. They're about ?800 for a 5-day course. 4 days of driving and your test on the 5th day.

Keep plugging away and you will find something.

An employer can dismiss someone who is on the sick for a prolonged period, if the employer can prove you are no longer fit to do the job your employed to do,
But you would be sent for a medical and the decision would be up to the doctor.

good luck with the job situation m8
i am a bin wagon driver and see how hard you lads work in all weathers with a pretty much negative public reaction to our job,

hear all the quips,i pay your wages, lazy, home for dinner,700 quid a week, heard it all

i work for a north west council and take home 1200 per calender month, watched your employers issue you lads with redundancies after shafting you with job evaluation (resulting in a average 70 quid a week drop in wage here)
same band scale as a kitchen assistant my arse. i will gladly dish spuds if any canteen worker wants to swap and bang bins on for a few weeks.

our council is as corrupt as yours m8 and have been trying to get out myself but even with a hgv licence permanent jobs are few and far between.

                    good luck

Plenty of work for HGV drivers. Most agencies take you on full time now. I was getting ?12 an hour doing TESCOS deliveries and that was a doddle.

Most driving work now is done through agencies as the big companies recoup most of what they pay. It was a stupid government incentive thing that has gone silly and now agencies control most of the Driving sector.

Phone this mob up if you have an HGV license and you will be in work tomorrow.

thanks for the post, round here it averages about ?9 an hour through the agencies with mainly the co op but you are waiting for a phone call or being offered sh1tty start times,

they have even managed to wangle there way around the swedish delegation recommendations regarding agency workers

personally if i was sacked i would go down that route but will not leave a permanent job to try it

That is true. The start times tend to be poor but to be honest i was well in with the agency after producing a high standard of work after about 3 months i got to pick my hours.

We have a large tesco store here and all 750 employees on the warehouse floor are agency. Thats the reason it is so hard to get a "permanent job" now.

People think agencies are scrupulous but i found that i earned more with an agency than being offered full time employment once i had the foot in the door of whatever company i was sent to.

Had one offer me full time when they seen i done a 60 hour week without a grumble. I sat down with the company director. He offered me ?6.50 an hour. I was on ?9 from the agency so i told him i would stick with agency.

Also MANPOWERUK are a very well organized agency.

No excuse for not having any type of work now really but i do know what its like to be searching as even the agencies have theyre quiet spells. Now on the run up to christmas anyone wanting work will get it through an agency.

Bus drivers in N Ireland get close to ?12 per hour, and about ?14.50 OT.
