Maths hasnt changed at all since i left school
it was decimal currency when i was at school and its decimal currency now.. are you seriously telling me that school didnt teach you that 3 into 2 doesnt go? or how to do subtractions? this is taught at all schools.. LONG before you get onto pythagorus theorem or anything else.. ~~~~ing hell, its taught by parents before you even START school!
Its not up to school to teach you to live within your means, THATS common sense, they give you the maths needed to apply common sense.. if some ~~~~er has ?200 wages and spends it all on shite before buying food and electric etc..... then how is that ANYTHING to do with school? They either didnt listen or are too thick to understand maths.
"they give you shittly little figures?"
what? NUMBERS???? what are they supposed to do? money is written is numbers ffsFave replies from various threads

I dont think school or being prepared for leaving school has anything to do with it, I got taught ~~~~ all about finance in school but what I did learn very quickly from my parents is that when I wanted something I had to go and get a job to buy it, Saturday and after school job is where I started earning MY money, when I left school and wanted my 1st motorbike I had to go get a real job to buy it as there was nowhere I could go to get money and its been the same ever since, if ive not got the money I cant buy it simple as that. Problem these days is quite a few people out there think they are owed something, why I dont know, they think they can sit around on their fat lazy arses do ~~~~ all and get money for itComment

its a bit hard to have common sense when you're stuck in a rut though.
the country is a prime example, how are people meant to stay out of debt when the government, or the banks can't even?
okay i stand corrected, the government don't lead a good example and it seems people are following suit, except they don't have anyone to bail them out when it gets too far.
it is everyones own choice to take on a credit card they can't afford to pay back, but does that really mean they deserve to kill themselves for fear of people judging them?

ah so now its NOT schools fault, its the banks/ governments for setting a bad example..
why isnt it the people taking out the loans fault?
Granted, the minority need money quickly, for example, an unexpected car repair, but the banks, yes the 'big bad banks' have LONG advocated saving, as have the government with premium bonds.. If you get into debt, YOU are to blame, nobody else, ifyou dont read the small print, or dont read how much you have to pay back on loan applications, then its YOUR fault.. nobody elsesFave replies from various threads

No but the common sense should step in before you make the decision to get a C\card and even more so when you keep on loading it up and know you cant pay it backComment

im thinking about the ones who become ill and can't work to pay their mortgage and get into debt that way.
there is loads of scenarios of getting into debt other than people being greedy.
im not saying people should get a pat on the back and have their debt cleared, far from it. but i don't think it should be as advertised as it is. right now times are hard, and people are vulnerable when it comes to getting a quick fix and its not nice to read or hear about people dying over money. some people need to be a bit more empathetic and less judgmental.

It's all so easy for people to critisise others for getting into debt, but it's not that difficult, even living within your means,
I recently helped someone who got himself into difficulty through no fault of his own,
he was working 36 hours a week, and got some working tax credits, lived in rented accommodation, had a cheap fifth hand car, mobile phone on 2 year contract, nothing flash, you get the idea.
his employer gave him 90 days notice that his contract was to change from a permanent to a zero hour (as and when required) status, his working hours started to drop, some weeks he got 12/24 hours, some weeks no hours at all,
as a result he fell in to arrears with his rent, he couldn't claim housing benefit, because he couldn't give them an average weekly hours worked, he also lost his tax credits because his working hours dropped below the minimum 30 hours required to qualify for help.
the debts started mounting up, gas/electric, council tax, water rates, etc.
In the end he had to resign from his job, and sign on, mainly to get help with his rent, but he got some of his benefits stopped because he resigned(not allowed).
he then got an eviction notice from his landlord for rent arrears, phone got switched off, couldn't afford to keep his car(that was only worth about ?500).
he then got told he was having money taken from his benefit to pay for council tax he owed, he got another letter telling him he was going to have more money taken from his benefit for an overpayment in tax credits, he was effectively living on ?42 a week,
this poor guy was at his wits end and couldn't see a way out,
I went to court with him to apply for a suspension on the eviction order, but there was a ?40 charge to apply for the suspension order, and because he was on contributions based JSA, he had to pay it, if he was on income based JSA he wouldn't have had to pay??, I payed the ?40 for him.
he then got a debt relief order to keep the wolves from the door and to stop the DWP taking money from his benefits, me and some other friends gave him the ?90 fee to pay for it.
now if someone can tell me where he was irresponsible I'd like to know, sometimes circumstance can deal you a real shitty hand.!retupmoc eht ni deppart m'I !pleHComment

I used to think along similar lines when I was younger.
I had a brother who tried to commit suicide (he had alchol problems) by hanging himself, fortunately I found him in time and saved him. He sorted himself out eventually despite having other problems and going blind, only to die suddenly from a heart attack.
I used to think you have a problem, sort yourself out ! simple.
And for me this appeared to be the solution, until recently when I became seriously depressed (reasons are quite involved) and believe me I dropped to such depths that I felt I could not carry on. The only thing that stopped me was the thought of how my brother's attempted suicide had affected the family and I did not want to affect my family in the same way.
When depression sets in; for whatever reason, it is a hard, hard slog and I still have a long hard slog ahead. Thankfully I have a really supportive wife and family and an excellant understanding GP.Comment
