    Bt Broadband

Ok so split up with the mutant and moved in myself, unfortunately street doesnt have cable.

Went through a lot of hassle to eventually get everything with Sky, had my TV installed on the 6th and my telephone lin and broadband were to be installed 7-10 working days later.

Well I eventually got a letter from Sky saying my line will be installed on the 28th of March and the broadband activated on the 1st of April(funny ha ha).

Phoned BT they said they could get it done yesterday so cancelled all the Sky stuff and went with BT.

Bt installed the line yesterday and sent me out a BT Vision box(which is actually quite good) and the wireless router.

Set everything up and went online - browsing is fine quick enough but the download speeds are horrific!!

I did a few speed tests and every test Ive done is reporting between 1.5 and 2 mbit.

Now I know they quote "up to 8mbit" and its reasonably expectable to have shit speeds during peak hours, but downloading off SCT - where I maxed out my virgin 20mbit connection - is still only hitting 175k if im lucky!

I have ran tests and downloaded between 8 and 12 last night. Thought ok peak times, Ill try in the morning.

This morning when I got up to feed the dog at 6, I tried again, same shite.

Again when I tried at half 8 before leaving work.

This is just complete and utter pish - especially for the price.

Does anyone know how easy it is to get out of a contract with BT. I havent signed anything but the service has only been on for one day and surely theres a cooling off period?

Ive been reading about Be broadband and o2 offering a more advanced ADSL2+ service on my exchange that I would really rather go with now as this service is just pathetic.

with adsl they test your line for 10 days to see what its capable of then set you at the best consistent speed, its frustrating but bear with it and you should eventually get a happy medium speed

You'll also get better speeds without the bellwire (number 3 wire) attached in all your extensions. Moot point if you have none, but worth mentioning.

Your actual line is 2 and 5 and to make the extension phones ring, in the olden days, a third wire was connected to 3, but that is no longer the case.

Remember, you also have to have ADSL filters on ALL sockets whether you use them or not. These act as a substitute for the bellwire for one and filter out interference for two.

        Good post edds.

Are you by any chance an ex BT engineer.
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I do not know the answer.

Actually there is a capicator in the socket that makes the phone ring. Thats why the bell wire is no longer required. It will be down to how far you are from the exchange mate, as I explained in your other post.

Try and get an SSFP if you can, they are better than filters, and that way only the master socket needs to be filtered.

I used to be an engineer. .

Talk Talk are offering fibre optics.

P.S. as to why someone would sit and watch those silly colour changing lamps instead of going online defeats me.

                BT is absoloutly shite PERIOD.
Just wait till Phorm goes live and things will only get worse, think of instead of just directly connecting to a website you have to bounce the connection arround various deep packet inspection equipment, then have that check you havve the propper cookie (if not it will install one on your end) then have it scan against a list of sites to check theyre "safe" before allowing you to connect... blisteringly fast then you have the additional peace of mind in knowing that BT will monitor everythng you do online, private entities only have your best interests at heart afterall...[/sarcasm]
Best of all if BT doesnt like what your reading that can quite easily be modified to suit their agenda YIPPEE!

The best ADSL broadband package you can get your hands on in the UK is from BE* broadband, up to 24mb down 3mb up.

They will push your line to the maximum it can resonably support and as a bonus they allow you to download a metric f**kton without hassles, i regularly download 800+gb a month roughly 200~250 a week and get no gyp from them.

Then they allow tweakers, i was pretty rural so i found that instead of ADSL2+ (G.992.5) that forcing my modem to G.992.3 Annex L gave me more stability and speed, be didnt have a problem with me playing around with the hardware in order to achieve the best results from my line.

Its cheap as chips too, base pack of up to 8mb comes in at like ?12 a month.

Phorm is not only limited to BT as an ISP. VM and others have signed up. BE is probably the best available at present, but if people join and continue to eat bandwitdh, then the service wont be that good for that long.

No one can reasonable justify the amounts that your downloading, not as a residential user.
