Help identify a Movie

Please, can anybody help me identify a movie I vaguely remember watching 10 to 20 odd years ago? I dont have much to go on, but here goes.. I remember there being two prisoners in adjoining cells in a foriegn jail, I think they were being held for drugs smuggling maybe, they both have shaven heads I think, then one of them gets taken to be hung, the other hears this, and from his small cell window he can see his friend being dragged along outside across a large dusty yard by two guards to the gallows, he then see his friend having a hood put over his head and then dropped... I think the bloke still in the cells then some how escapes or goes on to somehow avoid being executed himself..

neither of them films sound correct.. i certainly dont remember a cellmate being hung in either rather it was the guillotine in papillon..

Thanks but nahh, it wasnt Midnight Express, Papillon or Bangkok Hilton... Thinking about it a bit more, Im not sure it was about drug smuggling, the guys might have been captured soldiers, maybe it was a ww2 movie, Japanese prisoners of war, did they hang pow's?

japs did LOTS of stuff to pows.. hanging seems a bit quick for them tho.. they liked their torture

i think i might have seen the film youre describing.. if im right in saying the guy who gets killed either its his sister or lawyer who helps to free the other man or gets him found innocent? if that makes any sense, im more thinking it was his sister though for some reason.

even if im wrong with the film you seen its gonna be a long night trying to remember the name of the one im thinking about
