    Why?

    If all telephone numbers in the UK start with a zero why do we need to dial them or even have them. I do understand that for international reasons all numbers may need to be the same length but the zero could surely be discarded for within the UK

        Maybe because there's 999, 112, 150, 151, 152 and perhaps many other numbers that dont begin with a 0

                  Why the 0? I think it's a legacy of the way our phone system is structured, pretty sure it's something like the initial 0 tells the exchange that you're going to be making a standard trunk call...

                  Ah, got bored trying to remember and voila google/wikipedia to the rescue Trunk prefix - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

                  It's just legacy stuff that's still kicking around AFAIK. Back in the day you could exploit stuff like this and send your own tones down the line to make exchanges do more fun things for fun/profit. Google phreaking/blue boxes/2600/etc for more info
