Starting my own Burger and Grill diner

For a while now I have been thinking about going on my own and starting my own business. Dont get me wrong, my job is well paid and relatively stress free, however I would like to be my own boss at some point.

Now I have worked out the prices for rent etc, but what I cant seem to find anywhere is the price of wholesale meat (I intend to hand make the burgers to order), so in particular mince meat.

Any one got any ideas where I can look? Thought about local butcher, but I dont think he will do me wholesale prices but I will ask.

I also thought be doing all day breakfasts, sloppy joes etc so will be more of an american diner too.

All in my head at the moment, but any advice would be appreciated

Find out where your local abattoir is and give them a call.

your local butcher will certainly give you a discount if you are buying regular off him- Steak mince is what you want for your burgers and a big pot of home made soup always keeps the customers at bay. As a side note i would give punters a free tea or cofee if they buy a couple of rolls or breakfast. It costs **** all to make up and is really appreciated by your customers.

Yeah I was thinking along the lines of what can be done to keep them coming!

I dont want to be a late night diner fighting for business with the kebab houses, I was thinking more like early morning breakfasts/all day breakfasts through to early evening meals, but it has to be something that will bring people in.

The burgers would all be handmade, and was thinking of making sausages myself too.

Good idea about the tea, add that to the list.

        Cheers

Daily specials like home made macaroni or lasangna. Im not too sure about them gourmet burgers, will your punters be willing to pay extra for them and then theres the waiting time to cook them and then the moaning about it being not cooked to what they asked ie rare medium rare well done.

Well I wasnt thinking of using steak mince, just normal braising steak and mince it myself. I have made these burgers numerous times at my own BBQ's and they have not had a bad review yet from people (believe me I have a few friends who would glady tell me if they were shite).
I could always add an extra steak mince burger.

I do a good home made lasagne and can do my own soup of the day. Also chilli would be home made for chilli burger and dogs.

Omelettes and jackets to round of the menu

foods that you can taste will always bring people in,chicken that tastes like chicken and not rubber,a good quality tea and coffee.the all day breakfast sounds nice but my local uses small eggs i thought large eggs be better.
pity i cant drop in for a taste test, you could ask the customers
how they enjoyed or not there meal as you want feed back.
my pub serves ready salted chips and half the time i send them back, suppose to serve without salt.

He does his own burgers, but I like to make my own using my own recipe. That way I know whats gone into them and have some quality control over them

This is my line of thought, the amount of times I have eaten somewhere and thought the food was terrible, and I would eat somewhere for a little more money but a lot more taste. I know a few people who think the same too. Where I live is crying out for somewhere that cares about the taste a bit more than the profit...

Just a thought. Have you looked into hygiene laws etc?

Use some good coffee most places I've been to uses cheap coffee that let's it down. The regular shop I use only uses good meat an they always busy. Nothing worse than crap bacon or sausages for breakfast

                      Good luck

Yeah Hygiene laws are key, and I would have to complete some courses here before I start, and the local council will help with stuff like that.

That was my next suggestion if you ain't. Basic food hygiene is day course if its not changed

true near my home there were 3 cafes in the same location over the years selling bad food and they closed, the new place i know the food as there is its sister branch opposite where i work and they come from 5 miles away for rolls, wraps because the flavour of the food is better and i dont mind paying for good food.

curious when you mention the hygiene laws of how many chemicals are used to clean surfaces and would steam cleaning without chemicals work?
