          Incorrect
          2+(1+3)x3-3+3 = 14
          2+(1+3x3)-3+3 = 12
          2+(1+3x3-3)+3 = 12
          2+(1+3x3-3+3) = 12
          2+1+(3x3)-3+3 = 12
          2+1+(3x3-3)+3 = 12
          2+1+(3x3-3+3) = 12
          2+1+3x(3-3)+3 = 6
          2+1+3x(3-3+3) = 12
          (2+1)+3x3-3+3 = 12
          (2+1+3)x3-3+3 = 18
          (2+1+3x3)-3+3 = 12
          (2+1+3x3-3)+3 = 12
          (2+1)+(3x3)-3+3 = 12
          (2+1)+(3x3-3)+3 = 6
          (2+1)+(3x3-3+3) = 12
          (2+1)+(3x3)-(3+3) = 6
          (2+1)+(3x3)(-3+3) = 12

Along with lots of other incorrect ways

          Correct
          2+1+3x3-3+3 = 12

no brackets so its a straight forward sum -

              2+1+3x3-3+3 + 18

Hardware fault causes me to get 9 OR 3. BUT explain it like this!

                  My excuse is this:-

                  2+1 is three then add 3x3 (9) so that's 12 then - 3+3 (6) = 6
                  OR
                  2+1 is three then add 3x3 (9) so that's 12 then - 3 +3 (6) = 12

Definately 12. BIDMAS is used even if there are no brackets. You just move on to Indices then multiplication/division then addition and subtraction. When only multiplication and division or addition and subtraction are left in expression work you calculate them as you find them working from left to right.

In the initial sum you would multiply 3x3 first giving 9. You are then only left with additions and subtractions working from left to right you would have: 2+1+9-3+3 which gives you 12.

A similar question was on radio yesterday and they got some Professor of Mathematics from Cambridge to explain it. I'd have got it wrong if I never heard his explanation.

PS If you have -3 and add 3 you get 0. That would give you 12 in both your answers Meaty

numbers - not my department - i'm in workshop.

So i have 12 apples, you have 3, then you give them back, do i have 0 apples then?

Would expect to have 12 apples still.

Ok lots of answers and yet no lucid explanation for those that don't know, (Gmb, Jordigirl and other gobshites) So explain the answer and sequence so these two can understand.

                            The Hillsborough Independent Panel. 12/09/12

Today's report is black and white. The Liverpool fans were not the cause of the disaster.
The panel has quite simply found 'no evidence' in support of allegations of 'exceptional levels of drunkenness, ticketlessness or violence among Liverpool fans' and 'no evidence that fans had conspired to arrive late at the stadium' and 'no evidence that they stole from the dead and dying'.

                                2 + 1 + 3 + 3 + 3 - 3 + 3 =

                                Does that make it easier?
