Sony Experia U, Samsung Galaxy Ace 2. I would personally save up a little more & purchase a Nexus 4.

galaxy note. it is big, but it is an awesome device. although it is a pc and other things before it is a phone. it is more than ?150 to buy outright, but can get on decent contract for 20-25 per month.

Galaxy ace is a good wee phone.

You have failed to tell us why you want a smart phone. What do you want to do with it?

I found myself looking at cheap phones yesterday.

Samsung Wave Y was the cheapest decent phone (?50)
But it runs on Bada, which is a very good, stable platform. But there are nowhere near as many apps available when compared to Apple or Android.

Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 is slightly over your price at ?160 +?10 voucher.

HTC Desire C (?100). It ain't gonna win any speed contests, but it's capable.

You could look at Nokia's Lumia range. But I'm not a fan of Windows phones since 6.5 was replaced by 7.
On a better note, the Lumia 800 does survive reasonably well. I've treated the same phone 3 times for water damage (dropped down the toilet each time). No replacement parts have been needed & it's still working.
