always make profiles on fb private. i was told that even if your profile is private and you add pics from your mobile everyone can see them. you need to go into every pic and amend the settings. dont know how true that is as i hardly upload pics to there.

and you are correct on the police having access. It's part of the agreement between FB and the police. Hope they get the saddo.
