I lived n iceland for a while ,moving from reykjavik up to dalvik, then to a little island called hrisey in the norhern fjords then over west to isafjorder and a place called sudureyri. You will find that about two thirds of the population live in the bottom left of the country and its not too wise to go walkabout anywhere else unless you know what your doing. To be honest its just as cheap to fly anywhere as to drive and believe me landing on mountainside `airstrips` is pretty spooky at times, and if you use some of the smaller strips the plane does`nt stop, you haveto run alongside the bugger and toss your rucksacks in then the co pilot or a passenger will haul you in,as they dont like to hang around.I loved theplace, its a mixture of lunar landscapes dotted with some very nice little towns.Try to learn a bit of the language if you like but after a year and a half it still sounded like somebody vommiting through a toilet roll holder to me,but the people are really friendly and most will do anythig t help you, just bring millions of pounds because nothing is cheap as most stuff has to be flown everywhere(and when you find your seat on the aforementioned plane, dont be surprised to find your sharing it with crates of chickens,or milk or just about anything else)I would say gather loads of info and plan your trek as best you can,if your planning on working a bit practice gutting fish!Just go and enjoy it but be prepared for some serious cold,i lived down your way for nearly 5 year and it never got below 30 as far as i can remember, its a shock believe me.I know you said only 17 days but thats what i told them when i first landed there!
