What does technology and DK do for you?

We all have one thing in common on DK, we all love technology, there are many different types that DK covers but what technology makes you tick and why?
What do you think of today's technology compared to yesterdays, what do you think of members today compared to yesterdays.
What technology really gets on your nerves?

(please keep it clean, no personal attacks, am talking about today's generation as supposed to someone you dislike)

A would also like to hear the opinions of the Mods and Admin if you can spare a min, why do you give up your time for free and what changes have you noticed over the years, good or bad and what do you think the future DK will look like?

A know its a lot of questions and a don't expect you to answer them all, am just trying to get a picture of how you see the current state of technology and how DK plays a role in that?

What technology makes me tick?
Hmmm good question, as I like all technology. But if I had to choose I would say I prefer technology that I can mess with.
For instance its pretty well documented that I prefer Android tablets/phones over any other, fruit based phone, there are a number of reasons for this but chiefly, I enjoy trying out new roms which means rooting and often playing with command lines.
I prefer a linux based receiver over say an openbox or blade etc because again it offers more options for messing.
PC over laptop for the same reasons and I prefer my raspberry pi to any other media player i have had.

Ive always been a gadget freak since my spectrum days and it continues now, I remember having an mp4 watch from china and a tv phone, likewise i remember buying the camera add on for my nokia 9210 that transmitted pictures to the phone via infra red .

How has DK changed since my first arrival back in 2008?
I wouldnt say it has all that much, we still have the core members who were here my first time around, thered, cantona eva, kv am and gmb when he was a noob looking for help with his eurovox , but like all things, good people have left like lanxman, sgtflipflop and mr pumpy who was the original nonsense poster before meaty started popping his head out of the garage section , but we've gained new members who have enhanced dk, people like tshirtman who has basically ran the ebook section single handedly.

I also find that with the influx of cheaper boxes such as openboxes we have had an influx of people who dont WANT to read and learn, they want spoonfeeding and everything on a plate because they didnt research before buying, now im not having a go at noobs per se, we were all one once, and my very first post was asking noob questions, but the difference was i was asking them pre purchase so I had some sort of clue before I bought my first dreambox.

What technology gets on my nerves? Easy. APPLE
for numerous reasons; the prohibitive costs, the locked down operating system, the terminology it has introduced into society, people saying "wheres my iphone".. nobody ever said "wheres my nokia" or "wheres my motorola colorado". I hate Itunes, I hate the fact that you have to make an appointment to take the crap for repair at an apple shop, I hate the fact that the dumbos you take it to are called "geniuses".

I hate the fact that it has an mp3 player but you cant just use any song on it as a ringtone, i hate the fact it doesnt bluetooth with other phones.

I despise it on a molecular level.

modern technology is great when it works, make use if it if it exsists.

EXAMPLE:-

Costomer wants to play his Ipod(R) through his car stero, nobody supports Ipod(R) for that car, so next suggestion use a bluefish (TM) handsfree kit, with built in Ipod(R) function.

Nobody does a interface for that car, because it is 100 % fully amplifed and uses Fiber Optic Technology.

OK, so rings the setaler, what do they offer.

Adolf in the parts says, no sorry we cannot do anything with that car.

Solution, go to Ebay and for $2 buy a 'casseste to AUX' converter, stick in tape deck plug into Ipod(R)

So what was the point in spending MILLIONS investing in Fiber Optic Technology, so find buggered if you can do anything with it.

However back to the OP, what makes it tick is the question that keeps me looking at technology. TBH I see very few innovations lately, just more expansion of stuff that's already existed for a very long time. I've not seen any technology that impresses me for a very long time now. I await to be impressed.

I give up my time for free as I have an aversion to technology unless it is in educated hands, hence why I arrived here. I also have an aptitude for satire but that's for another thread.

Joking aside as you said in your post we all have some sort of interest in technology.As a forum we are probably quite diverse in regards to not only the multifaceted sections relating to such, but more so how we can make it work to our benefit as opposed to doing what it is "supposed" to.

Changes I have noticed over the years are purely based upon the timeline I have lived in, (I am old but not that old), but to say I remember as a child my TV remote was a brush handle would be an idea of where I come in the technological timeline. I did however learn to "hack" the remote by adding an extender to it................ i.e another brush handle

In a nutshell the evolution of technology will progress and we need to decide for ourselves how we will interact with it.Yet before we can do that, we need to understand what it is and hence why I am here.

The changes I have noticed throughout the years are too many too list, but in answer to what I have noticed over the years is that we are still at our infancy in relation to certain areas and yet light years ahead in others. Unfortunately this is driven by financial gain and not human curiosity or innovation, sometimes technology leads to stupidity.

The questions you pose in relation to where we at DK are going in my opinion will always be in line with where we can make the optimal use of technology to our benefit. I would like to add that by doing so we help to educate and learn ourselves in each area we cover.

To me technology has two faces and hand on heart I cannot say whether I prefer my brush handle remote or my current multimedia set up

though it does make quite interesting reading, certainly in some areas at least. I shall add though the thing that gets on my nerves the most is people who think they understand everything who generally know f'all about technology and think that everything is so easy. I'm a software developer (we used to be called programmers when I first started, but that's another story) from the early 1980's and I have to say when I wrote something back then it had to be small and compact, and actually do what you wanted, not require 2GB of RAM because your boss wanted an icon to push that told him what day it was. I still say that there isn't anything new, it's the same old stuff with a few new tweaks every few years. The biggest change of late was removal of the cathode ray tube from monitors 'nuff said

hmmmm, i first came to dk looking for a fix for my eurovox blue box back in november 2008 as shady mentioned, made a complete hash of my first post, i first got into the digital age when i got me first digital camera about 7 years ago, then thought ffs need a pooter now, so got a basic tower set up which im still using now, by now technology is starting to bite, brought a printer next thing, so i was was ok fur a while on the technology front, then decided need better camera more ?????, then me old crt tv started playing up hmmmmm the fat en said she would like one of the lcd tvs so i thought hmmmmm, any way decided on a sony internet tv more ?????????, not cheap this technology game ffs this got me into streaming stuff from the net to the tv using serviio home media server, then it was i needed media player more ??????? then 2 external hdds more ?????????, i got a lappy recently sony i3 brilliant it is, soon it will be smart phone ( cant afford one yet ) shady was gunna give me one ( phone that is ) but the daft old pt bricked it . thing is technology never stands still so there always something to part ya from your beer tokens ive defo got the technology bug although by no means am i techy.
back to dk, dk means a lot to me as you all know, dk hasnt change much since i joined ( although as you know its going to soon ) few new forums, odd one removed for obvious reasons, some regulars have disappeared new ones joined, dk has played the major part in my digital revolution, also dk is my main socialising out let and hobby, ive met xant, madge, shady, redspider,chim, and dik from the garage ( good lad cheap n aw ), all i consider as friends.

As a newbie to these forums I can't say whats changed too much, though even over the short period of time I have been reading and posting I have noticed the spoonfed culture getting bigger and bigger on here, I may only have a F3 atm but unlike sooo many now I read how to setup and get it working way before I brought it and am now looking at bigger and better boxes

As for what makes me tick, ever since I was a kid I loved taking things apart to see how they worked, got into computers in the 80's and my life changed I became a geek, Now I am grown up still the same still opening stuff up still fixing stuff and still a geek.

Tech I love is computers, though not a apple fan as I like open gardens and not walls, hate phones only got a mobile phone last year and hate it, don't mind the phone as a tech item just hate being contactable when I am out.

Anyhow loving this forum and not just for the satellite stuff but for the all round tips and the fun in the general sections, long may it continue

I think it's safe to say there are basically two types of people here on DK. Geeks & tards.
Geeks are those that understand & try to teach the tards how to become geeks. And by god, there have been some success stories. But some tards just want to stay a tard.

Of course I'm referring to the spoon fed cattle that society has become. Myself, I'm a geek...loud & proud. By no means do I know it all, but I'm willing to learn if needed.

My tech days started in the time when I was the tv remote control & we only had 3 chanels, betamax was still a contender & the most infuriating thing in the world was trying to write a program on a ZX81.

I have a love affair with my tech that's almost illegal. Most of my time has been spent on computers, phones & cars. But there seems to be no end to the things I'm willing to have a go at.

I've only been on DK for a short time, so have seen little change. I do believe there are members of the admin team that are constantly drunk or high...can anyone else explain GMB's mod status or Jumbles rise to VIP?
My journey to DK was a sad one. With the disappearance of Satkings I needed a new home, there were a few of the SK crew huddled together in a corner of the cable section, so I joined them. The rest as they say, is history.
