Taser police in blunder zap shocker

ZAP-happy cops have blasted sheep, pets and even THEMSELVES with Tasers, it has been revealed.

The 50,000-volt stun guns have also been used on a frail, suicidal man of 89 and a "dangerous" lad aged 14.

The shocking statistics are likely to fuel fears over the controversial weapons - even though an extra 6,000 Tasers will be issued to forces over the coming months in a crackdown on violent crime.

Last October, North Wales Police zapped a runaway sheep to get it off the road on the A55 near Bodelwyddan.

Locals nicknamed the poor animal Sparky.

In 2007, a Gwent Police officer checked to see if his Taser was working - and shot a barb into his own finger.

    He was given "appropriate advice".

Officers in Hampshire also shocked a teenager considered "dangerous".

In January, a pensioner was Tasered as he threatened to cut his throat with broken glass in Llandudno, North Wales.

At least eight dogs have also been shocked.

The firearm has been fired in error at least ten times, Freedom of Information Act stats revealed.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission called for better training.

Deputy chairman Deborah Glass said: "We are monitoring the roll-out of the Taser very closely.

"They carry the risk of misuse and the public will be rightly concerned."

Tasers, introduced in 2004, had been used 1,181 times by the end of 2008. London's Met used them 254 times - the most.
