I've missed the article about shops having vanished! in meatcity, local shady character was seen in area shortly before the shop disappeared local PC plod baffled as to where the shops are being fenced!!!

Correct! If the question has to be asked it should be timed appropriately. Not before the customer has had a chance to sample the food properly and certainly not as an interruption to the conversation between diners.

In decent restaurants the question "Was everything ok with the food" is asked when you pay the bill. They presume you have the gumption to complain if it wasn't.
