One man's freedom fighter is another man's terrorist as the saying goes. It's always sad when someone passes away but he has had the Simon Cowell of the terrorist world PR carried out on him. We're talking about a man who sanctioned bombs in public places killing innocent blacks, women and children. Did deals with Mugabe, Castro and Gadaffi. Necklacing thousands of fellow blacks who opposed his party. Syphoned off millions along with his family into offshore accounts and when in charge put all his cronies into powerfull positions which have led to some of the worst corruption known to man.

As for being the saviour of South Africa it is now one of the deadliest countries in the World where the people he is credited with bringing democracy to are now living in even worse conditions than during Apartheid.

Have a good read of the trial and reconciliation commission to get an idea of what he was responsible for. This is an unbiased report allowing both the ANC and Security Forces to own up to everything with the offer of amnesty to draw a line in the sand.

      Don't be a sheep.

It amazes me how many people that know what the press are like actually believe the hype about him. I've just had an arguement with a good mate about his involvement in the end of Apartheid. He swears blind it ended because of him and his arguement was that it's been all over the news so must be true.

I pointed out that at the onset of Apartheid there were many groups opposing it not just the ANC. Foreign countries were also involved infact the UN implemented trade embargoes which were backed by almost everyone bar the UK and the USA due to the amount of trade we had with them. America surprise, surprise wanted access to the countries natural resources. South Africa was a very profitable country at the onset. The Soviet Union who we were going through the cold war with at the time saw this as an opportunity to give the UK and USA a bloody nose, so financially backed terrorist grpoups both inside and outside of South Africa. South Africa was fighting wars with neighbouring countries at the same time and the UN implemented an arms trade embargo which screwed the country up a bit.

At this time about 90% of the countries wealth and taxes were covered by the whites even though they only made up a fraction of the population. Remember Appartheid had split up not only blacks and whites but also indians, chinese and mixed race. When India was granted membership of the UN they pushed for further trade embargoes to hurt the current government. The Russians financed demonstrations in countries outside of Africa and with the involvement of sportmen refusing to compete in South Africa Apartheid eventually hit mainstream media. This pressure eventually led to the UK and USA to implement the trade embarges and the countries finances started to go up the creek. Eventually the white voters started to turn on the government as they were losing money and forced a change in policies. This led to a new more liberal government who knew that the only way they could save face was to end apartheid. This is where Nelson Mandela came into the equation. He was the lucky pawn selected to use as a face for integration.

Now does this seem more realistic the way politics work or does a guy who was stuck in a cell who had as many enemies amongst the blacks, coloured and whites deserve the credit?

Tell him he is right, it was due to the 'Spitting Image' song from 1989

Indeed. I'd prefer to be charitable though and presume the poster is fairly young and unfamiliar with the facts of Apartheid.

Don't take my word for it but don't be sheep and believe the press either. Do some research into what Apartheid was. I also don't agree with it and if I was one of those affected would have no problems arming myself and fighting against it. I was just highlighting that the blacks, coloureds, Indians etc are suffering more since appartheid ended at the hands of their own politicians, shoe horned in by cronies.
