Police dogs die in parked vehicle

The dogs died at the police headquarters at Sherwood Lodge
Two police dogs have died in a hot vehicle parked outside the headquarters of Nottinghamshire Police.

An RSPCA officer was called to the Sherwood Lodge headquarters in Arnold on Tuesday and found two German shepherd dogs dead.

An independent vet is carrying out post-mortem tests to establish how the animals died.

The incident has been voluntarily referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

    'Swiftly reported'

Nottinghamshire's Assistant Chief Constable, Peter Davies, said: "This is a tragic incident and we value the important work our police dogs carry out on a daily basis.

"That is why we swiftly reported this incident to the RSPCA and we will be working with them very closely."

In a statement Nottinghamshire Police said the welfare of all of its animals was "of paramount importance and we endeavour to take every measure possible to ensure their well-being and safety".

The force refused to say what kind of vehicle was involved.

Nottinghamshire vet Andrew Wilson said: "The dehydration would have been a big factor.

"They wouldn't be able to cool themselves because panting wouldn't be effective anymore, there would be no evaporation from the tongue.

"As the core temperature rose as a result of that, and the brain temperature rose, the brain would cease to function and various other organs would fail. This happens certainly within 30 minutes."

A spokesman for the IPCC said the "matter had been referred to them on Tuesday afternoon and they were considering it".

They should put some sort of tag on a dog so that your car can't lock if the dog is inside. A week past on Sunday I was visiting a country park. In the car park there was a Range Rover with a Collie left inside. When we returned over 5 hours later the Range rover and dog was still there.
        Lucky the weather was cool.

There seems to be a mind set with these people. I have a great(misnomer) neice who actually puts her dog in the boot when she is going anywhere.

There are twio things that annoy me about this...

          1. The poor dogs, and the incompetance of the handlers to leave the dogs in the car on the hottest day of the year so far

          2. The loss of very intellegent and well trained animals which provide a great service as part of the police force. Just think of how much time, money and effort has gone into those dogs.

For your average policeman the load imposed processing things like "should I do this guy for speeding" or "can I give him a parking ticket" represents greater than 80% of their normal brain function so they probably forgot.

For sure at the very least they should be given desk jobs and if it were up to me they wouldn't be policemen anymore and would be treated the same way as they would treat a member of hte public that they had caught doing it.

Sadly in our society it won't happen, they will just be given more dogs.

FYI IIRC, it is illegal to put a dog in the boot of a car but it is not illegal to put a child there.

its a shame, i had a german shepherd bi#ch and she was the most loving dog you could ever imagine she only ate postmen but thats cool, but when i worked in the morgue i knew lots of police dog handlers and they loved their dogs very much and when the dog retired they took it home as a pet. so the world is fcuked up now and maybe the new guys dont care about the dogs. ok get people who love dogs in the job and sack the these aholes and prosecute them for criminal neglect, i hate when i hear this kind of shit makes my blood boil arrrrrghhhhhhhh !!!!!!

So the case has been passed on to the IPCC
When have u ever known the IPCC to make the right decisions!
The Police are already refusing to name the Officers who were in charge of the vehicles and dogs!
If I had done that, I would be arrested, named and shamed without and delay!
Keep an eye on the IPCCs investigation and reports.
The Officers involved will walk away "FREE".
SLOWLY, OUR FREEDOM IS BEING ERASED.
SOON, WE WILL JUST BE A NUMBER.
IF WE DON'T FOLLOW, WE WILL BE ERASED.

No doubt the dog handler is gutted, but he should have known better.. Poor dogs.
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I do not know the answer.
