NHS 'kills 72,000 patients' a year

A SHOCKING 72,000 patients a year are being killed by safety blunders in the NHS, a report by MPs reveals today.

It is more than SIX times higher than the official estimate of 11,000 deaths or serious injuries a year.

But the MPs said thousands of incidents are never reported.

Those on the Commons health select committee found "significant failings in the existing NHS safety policies and demanded more action to protect patients.

The report follows the Mid Staffordshire Trust scandal where hundreds of patients died "unnecessarily".

The MPs also criticised the way patients and families faced "lengthy and distressing litigation to obtain justice and compensation."

They said it was "appalling" a new simpler compensation arrangement was still not in place - three years after the laws to create it were passed.
