For the last 18 months, no matter what computer, where, who what why or when, EVERY SINGLE news website just freezes the computer i'm on, no matter what it has, freezes locks up, WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY????

Agggh! I've had a similar experience, though I never really worked too hard to get a news site to load - usually as I use Firefox simply went offline when I thought enough data should have loaded, and if it wasn't displayed after it was switched to offline, oh well, next place. The news sites seem to me to be rather heavy handed when it comes to scripts, which never really load properly and can bring the browser to stand still.

I really can't explain it, but I've noticed the same.

I'm not sure if it's related, but I have of late, noted other sites which have quit working properly or display anythingl. The few times I've struck it, I feel it's at times there is some involvement with "everywhere https" going south as well as what I refer to as "Browser Pirates" making their presence felt. Most BPs I've noted are from tracking or api processes sites, very unhappy for whatever little weird reason and pretty much that page you so dearly want to load (especially mozzilla based ones) won't.

A recent example of what I refer to BPs.

(1) Using an old version of firefox I was no longer able to visit quicktopic (Opera still worked fine) - nothing but the blank white screen, and even k meleon was unable to resolve that site.

The Browser Pirates were in one or both from within these sites

 ajax.googleapis.com and www.googleapis.com

Once they were included in the host file, their little boarding party were scuppered and QT loaded just like normal.

(2) Letitbit support section only ... affects - all browsers I tried ... the BP web site

www.google.com

added to host file and presto, in action. Goodness knows what exactly was was having a fit. It's painful though as google is required for many other sites and I take it out when I need to, like for their captcha many sites use.

Anyhow back on topic - what did I get ... not much except -- christmas night cleaning a dried (heat cured) sticky mess from a hard drive, usb enclosure for it, keyboard ... basically everything that was left in a backpack in the front seat of a car. Note - do not leave full soft drink cans in backpacks on the front seat of a car parked facing the sun - they will explode.
