Alcohol deaths rise by 40 per cent

Alcohol-related deaths have risen by 40 per cent in 10 years, new figures show.

Government's top doctor recommends price hike for alcohol
Department of Health admits that alcohol is one of the most challenging public health issues faced by it

The number of women dying from alcohol-related causes increased by 32 per cent and male deaths rose by 43 per cent.

In 1999 there were 5,287 deaths in England and Wales due to alcohol which rose to 7,341 in 2008, according to Government data.

There has also been a 24 per cent increase in deaths in people under the age of 40.

Shadow Home Office Minister, James Brokenshire, said: "I am increasingly worried that the Government's decision to introduce 24 hour drinking is having a real impact on anti-social behaviour in our town centres and not nearly enough is being done to tackle it.

"The impact on services like the NHS really can't go on."

Liberal Democrat health spokesman, Norman Lamb said: "This is horrifying evidence of the scale of the alcohol crisis facing this country.

"Unless the Government invests in treatment services, puts an end to alcohol being sold at pocket-money prices, and starts educating our children, then these figures are set to get even worse."

The figures relate to clear cases where the death was caused by diseases where the majority of cases are caused by alcohol such as cirrhosis, however other data which takes into account diseases like cancer where some cases are caused by alcohol and others are not, show an even higher death toll.

A spokesman for the Department of Health said: "Alcohol is one of the most challenging public health issues we face. We are working harder than ever to reduce alcohol related hospital admissions, and to help those who regularly drink too much or are dependent on alcohol.

"Around 15,000 people die due to alcohol related issues every year. We are tackling this serious problem by making sure the local NHS has the right services in place. For every pound spent on alcohol intervention, five pounds are saved by the public purse ? so this is money well spent."

I can relate to that gmb a wee bit.

My cousin (female) has been an alcoholic for as long as i can remember, she's a touch over 50 now and i cant believe she's still alive.
Years ago i remember she'd just come out of hospital with liver trouble, i was walking past the boozer when i saw her sat outside on the steps p1ssed as a fart, had to take her home.
    Funny old life init.
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I do not know the answer.

bin there don it m8, when u hooked on alcohol life is a living nightmare m8, i hate the people who take the pi55 out of alcoholics they dont have a clue what its like, and the withdrawel is 10x worse than a drug addict will ever get, i know, and the funding is 5x more for drug rehab than for alcoholics makes me very angry.i used to attend a day centre for alchis and i saw at least 20 people die from alcohol related problems that was at just 1 place.

yes i know whare you are coming from .i lost two close pals due to alcohol quite recently,it is not a pretty site ,multiple organ failure then brain death.more must be done to prevent youngsters from starting on the road.as they think that it is fun to get drunk and not knowing the danger that they are putting themselves under.it would be a good idea if the government introduced some sort of educational programme in to the school system.i would start by showing them the full consiquences of alcohol abuse.

Wouldnt do any good, besides why should it be a teachers responsibility? i got sex, drug and alky education at school.
Cant say that any of it actualy helped.
Teenager still got preganant, i still got out my face on a number of chemicals (ive got 3 years of my life that i kan almost remember if i strain really hard, most is a blur... a damned good blur but a blur none the less) and most clasmates still wound up as alkies.

My local highstreet has poundshops, bookies, off lisences and pubs. thats it the rest is boarded up and derelict.
All there really is to do around here is sign on the dole, get out your face and hope for a quick and painless death.
Teachers preaching on about the ills of drink, drugs and sex (the only 3 real sports left in this town) would be laughed out the class.

Not that ive got any answers on how to improve matters though
