You could try a Kung Fu Forum Grasshopper.

North American Tang SHou Tao [Archive] - Kung Fu Magazine Forums

On second thought ask Mrs Pumpy. She is used to a kung foo every night.

Take a local Muay Thai course. Theres guaranteed to be one at your local gym/community center/leisure center
I used to go to thai boxing back in the early 90's it was fun and made me seriously fit.

Warm up routine used to hand me my ass back then, then it wet on to pad work to learn moves. a few classes on ritual dancing (you dance when you enter the ring to honour the gods, i danced as a prayer not to wind up tong po'd)

Then a few rounds of self defence practice (taking down peple with knives and such)

Used to love it, got up a few gradings then it got time to actualy fight... thats where it ended for me.
It was all fun and games with a few of the lads kicking the living shit outa each other. getting into a ring with a complete stranger who actively wanted to kill me was another story. (i thought my shins where hardcore, i abused them religiously to make them strong, after the first crossing of shins i realised mines where really made from butter)

Anyway nowadays i can do some exercise from the classes without needing any DVD's and im certain my posture and technique are correct.

I can remember getting screamed at for the first few weeks though because i left chalk marks (we used to chalk our heels, if we left a mark then our technique was all wrong and the instructor would loose the plot) working on your tiptoes for weeks on end makes your calf muscles STRONG and your shins gain massive strenght and bone density increases from kicking stuff with the bone, i used to roll glass bottles down my shins bi-nightly to increase strength (the crazy stuff you do to get an edge over your buddies ) That and punching stacks of plasterboard to improve your fist strength .
All of this is optional, but i enjoyed the maddness.

Used to love it, but im a lover not a fighter it seems, i went for the exercise and training, getting in the ring was pretty bad with full contact rules luckily thats only when you reach up to above a blue grading.

It works better than any DVD, you make friends and get all alpha male "MUST BREAK YUO" competative trying to outperform everyone else.
You get paired with someone and do like pressups for a warmup, face to face with your buddy and its DOWN... UP... TOUCH LEFT HANDS... DOWN...UP...TOUCH RIGHT HANDS.
Situps are again face to face, down up touch left hands (really worked my obliques that) and then laying flat with your feet just a few inches off the ground and holding them there desperately trying to outlast your buddy LOL
My mindset got totaly into having to outdo my mate, he performed one more pressup than i was capable and i was litteraly GUTTED, like close to tears from dissapointment in the later stages. which only made me train twice as hard to either beat him next time or atleast come to some draw (the problem is your mates know this and they train like madmen too )
You get really competative (im normaly not but theres something about being surrounded by guys that brings out the mob mentality) so it knocks your fitness training into high gear. You dont get bored because other people are there to help you out and give you a laugh, you learn a martial art and you generaly have a good time.

I even began to walk different, theres something about walking into a club with this huge inner confidence knowing (rightly or wrongly) that should shit go down you can take care of it that women seem to notice and find highly attractive. that and being ripped from training like a madman "I'LL GET YOU NEXT TIME GADGET" mentality.

            Seriously good fun.

I guaged my upper body strenght by the ammount of exercises i could do to failure.
I started one spring and could do one chinup with assistance by a sling, after 6 months i was wearing weights on my ankles as additional resistance.
Pressups, i could bust out maybe 4? when i started, wound up well over a hundred after 6 months.

And 38 mins was my maximum record for the feet an inch off the ground exercise after 6 months (initialy a minuite was an eternity of burning tight pain)

So yeah shit worked for me, miss it badly. nowadays my fitness has declined into a dumpy loaf. i blame that on marriage though
He who laughs last thinks slowest.
