The only thing you have to remember is that every year tax rates n Ni rates change so any program will have to be upto date for the current Tax year!
Shite this takes me back, one of my first jobs was a payroll clerk for an employment agency I used to calculate employee wages MANUALLY, Box of P11D's adding machine n deduction tables what a bore would take me all week to calculate the previous weeks wages till I persuaded them to get a 5 grand PC (Had the processing power of a ZXspectrum) + software then only took me a day!
Check out the Tax Office website I'm sure they now do a spreadsheet that does the calculations for you.
Sage Payroll is probably about the best and yeah it does take a bit of getting used to but will produce good results once set up. It's not cheap but if its for company use then the taxman can pay for it!
