Manchester United shirt with a Hillsborough slur

RETAIL giant Sports Direct today apologised after selling a Manchester United shirt containing a vile Hillsborough slur.

The chain, which has five shops on Merseyside, also immediately changed its shirt policy following outrage from Reds fans.

The move came after Manchester United supporter Colm Jackson bragged on social networking site Facebook about buying the shirt at Sports Direct?s Arndale Centre store in Manchester.

Sports Direct today said the "spiteful and abusive" wording, which referred to the 96 Liverpool fans who died at the disaster, was "unknowingly" applied by an assistant who did not appreciate its significance.

The company added only footballer?s names and numbers would be applied to shirts at their 470 stores in future.

Furious Reds fans inundated the ECHO with calls about the top.

Stephen Lea, 30, from Litherland, said: "Different clubs have different ways of getting at people, but what he?s done is going much too far. To get Sports Direct to print this is disgusting."

Dennis Adams added: "It?s absolutely outrageous. I?m a passionate fan but I would never sink to their level.

"He?s probably going round with a smug grin on his face, but Sports Direct should never allow them to put that on their shirts."

Piss poor excuse by the shop if you ask me

    THE TRUTH
    The Hillsborough Independent Panel. 12/09/12

Today's report is black and white. The Liverpool fans were not the cause of the disaster.
The panel has quite simply found 'no evidence' in support of allegations of 'exceptional levels of drunkenness, ticketlessness or violence among Liverpool fans' and 'no evidence that fans had conspired to arrive late at the stadium' and 'no evidence that they stole from the dead and dying'.

A national sports retail chain has apologised for selling a Manchester United shirt bearing a Hillsborough insult.

Sports Direct also immediately changed its printing policy after a Red Devils fan posted images of the shirt on the social networking website Facebook.

The fan paid ?55 for the shirt and the slur to be printed about the 1989 disaster which killed 96 Liverpool FC fans.

On it, he chose the number 96 and under it the words "Not Enough". Above the number were the letters YSB - which stands for You Scouse B*****ds. The man's Facebook page was shut down.

Sports Direct said the employee who marked up the shirt did not know what the message meant. But Margaret Aspinall, whose son James, 18, was killed at Hillsborough, said she did not believe that.

Mrs Aspinall, chairman of the Hillsborough Family Support Group, said: "I think Sports Direct are worse than the guy who wanted it put on the back of his shirt. Printing that message is like inciting trouble, it is an absolute disgrace and Sports Direct should be ashamed.

"It is terrible for people who lost someone at Hillsborough to think their loved ones died so this guy can go to watch football in safety."

Sports Direct has 470 stores nationwide and is owned by Mike Ashley, owner of Newcastle Utd FC.

A company spokesman said: "Sports Direct has been notified that an extremely offensive and wholly inappropriate football shirt was printed at one of its stores. The store assistant printed this unknowingly and has been deeply shocked upon being notified of the significance of this and the upset caused.

"As a result, Sports Direct has taken immediate action and changed the administration policy for printing football shirts across its store network. With immediate effect, it will only allow printing of current football players names and numbers on football shirts."

To be fair to the shop though, how many of the young girls that work there would have a clue if you went in with a Liverpool top and got Munich 58 on the back..

Or if Leeds fans got a shirt with 'Crispy 56' on..

The Sports Direct staff by mine aren't a day over 18

      -----

Because the internet is such an excellent resource his name is already in the public domain along with his two mates who are cheering him on in the photo of him holding up the shirt..

      The shirt belongs to..

Colm Jackson (who's been wiped from facebook)

      his two mates are..

Simon Doc-Holliday Turner and Darren John Hannan (also wiped)

I'm not having that m8. We have just had the 20th Anniversary and it was in the news a lot at the time. They knew alright what it meant. Do you think if someone comes in to have some unusual lettering put on a shirt, the assistant wouldn't ask what it meant.

The little ***** who had the shirt only looks to be about 18 and he was well aware of what he was doing, i've no doubt the assistant knew too.

I think if someone went into a sports shop in Liverpool on a landmark anniversary of Munich and it was all over the tv about the tragedy i think they would be well aware.

There will always be idiots who claim to follow a club and do nothing but embarrass that club. This is a typical example. We all have dickheads like him.

As a United fan I find this appaling. I find it embarrassing that there is a United shirt out there with that on.

certainly in very bad taste but i have to agree with ops that the person in the shop probably had no idea what it meant on the shirt most of them are just young kids

people in general are naive and i think to be fair most people who seen the shirt unless they were liverpool or united fans would not realise that it was a slur and the impact it would create

if it were me in the shop being asked to do that to a shirt, i would grab the iron and shove it up their ASS sealing it closed with the heat. i would then feed them laxative

I wish other organisations would be so swift to act when things like this are brought to their attention. Go on any Liverpool fans forum and you'll see people referring to United as Munich's, openly hoping that Sir Alex Ferguson dies and if you go to a Liverpool-United game you get to hear the scousers sing songs celebrating Harold Shipman - because he only killed Mancs.

It's about time it all stopped.

Ok i go on plenty of Liverpool forums and that is a lie. Red and White Kop, Est 1892, Red all over the land, Shankly gates, The Liverpool way and TTWAR, to mention a few. Now you go on there and pull me out Just a few of those quotes. Or feel free to find another forum and quote from that.
I'm not denying there's idiots on every forum but to make out this is a common occurence and exclusive to Liverpool is out of order.

I've had a season ticket for The Kop for 25 years and watched Liverpool home away and abroad for about 40 years and been to Old Trafford countless times and you know what , I have never ever heard the Utd fans singing obscenities to us or had Urine poured over me from the Old scoreboard stand. I suppose i'm just lucky eh
