dublin @ new year

im sitting here pricing going to dublin for new year for a few nights. has anyone been at that time of year? i know pubs will be open but will places of interest and of course the shops be open?

im itching to book

ya everything will be open new years eve till around five or that usually the shops anyway
and im nearly certain the january sales start st stephens day so yal be spoiled for choice
and it been a bad recession in ireland yal probably get some great bargains

it not been bad recession for the boozers. they were charging 5 euro/ ?4.50 for a pint and they were packed

youll love it laine, i went 3 weeks ago and their friendlyness and helpfulness is second to non also there is lots of toursisty things to do

lainie there will be very few places of interest opened cos the new year falls on a weekend if trinity collage is opened the book of kells is a must see.

Dublin can be expensive Lainie,
And with sterling being weak against the euro you're probably not going to get many bargains,
but it's great "craic" for a weekend away.
I'm not from Dublin myself but i'm sure as it gets closer DK members from Dublin can suss out places that might be of interest to you to see if they're going to be open or not.

Cork is a 3 1/2 hour drive so if your thinking of going there you'd be better off flying into Cork rather than Dublin. AS New years is a Friday everything will be up and running again on the Saturday. We don't celabrate new years like you Scots folk do , Christmas is our Big One. True, Sterling is weak at the moment 91p=Euro but if you get away from Temple Bar and the real " Touristy "places it's not that bad. Catch a " Dart " the train service and go to Howth 45 mins, a lovely fishing village with super restaraunts on the harbour and very nice pubs or going South.. Dun Loaire 35 mins.. shops and food and much cheaper drink than Dublin city. In Dublin city ..Thomas ST..where Guiness comes from, Christ Church area has some nice boozers and far more resonable than the Temple Bar area. Burdocks chipper ( world famous ) is also there with a single and cod to die for but there may be a Q. Duvlinia also there ( Actors acting out the origional life in Dublin circa 800 ad )and worth a look

For sure, see Temple Bar but don't spend all your time in the kip. A stroll up Grafton street to St Stephans Green is a must to see all the "Nice People " with their Nice Shops, Gucci etc and the pubs just off the main strip are fine. Try Neary's where Thin Lizzy used to hang and Bruxells another pub with Phillo's statue outside it

Anything else you need just shout and I don't work for the Tourist Board LOL

I saw millennium new year in in ireland, altho it was in County Tipp, Stig's neck of the woods. I Have been to Dublin a couple of times, and it was ok, ok with the missus, coz we got in everywhere, but Rubbish with the lads, coz we only got in 2 pubs all night 'members only' yeah right.

im staying in the temple bar area as its central for everything but happy to travel for days out etc but it will be by bus or train. would like to see where bono lives etc. i know its around 10 miles outside of dublin. im there for 4 nights.
