The phrase 'freezing the balls off a brass monkey' comes from Napoleonic time when cannons were used......a brass monkey was a frame which held cannon balls in a pyramid shape.........when it got too cold the brass frame contracted faster than the cannon balls and thus the balls would fall off the brass monkey.
