I like my sci fi.
Let me reitterate i like reading sci fi, theres more variety in book form than in movies.
Movie goers generaly get a taste of honking big space guns, pathological robots and aliens with hostile intentions.
With a heavy dose of "asplosions and layzarz everywhere!!!111ONE!11" Throw in some desolite planets some wormeholes and rapidly burning out suns then sprinkle in some buffed out roided up marines with a few generic lines and youve got your general plot devices all set.
Reading sci fi.... well thats a completely different ball game, you dont have visual effects to rely on and your essentialy limited to what the human mind can physicaly concieve (which tends to be a lot now that i really think about it, regardless people get hold of a camera and decide they need to make more effects than actualy worry about the story or charicters)
So with distinctive caution and a heavy dose of trepidation i slapped in a copy of some movie called "Moon" directed by Duncan "zowie bowie" Jones whos (related to the almighty Ziggy Stardust himself) And a cast of maybe 4 people into my dvd player, for what i was sure was going to be a huge letdown and a complete waste of 90 minuites.
The story centers on Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell) a man concluding on his 3 year contract as a glorifed astronaut janitor with nowt but a robot GERTY (voiced by Kev Spacey) to keep him from going completely insane from the isolation of being alone on the moon.
his job is to watch the harvesters mine Hellium 3 deposits, pick the loaded canisters up and shoot them back down to earth.
Essentialy keep the minimng operation from falling to bits by unclogging the toilets.
It started out slow with references to 2001, Solaris and Alien.
Sets the pace for a full blown shining style meltdown from the sheer isolation of being out of contact and only a droid for company then goes completely haywire.
Im reluctant to go into any detail on the plot as it would spoil a lot of the magic. Suffice it to say i instantly rewatched it with my jaw on the floor (something i dont recall having ever done before with a movie) If you can forgive a slow start (which is kind of essential to the setup) and some early confusion your in for a real gem of a movie.
Hell its barely even sci fi, i know for a fact that my mom would love this and she hates the genre in its entirety (mostly because its almost always plotted along the reasons i listed previously, or a slow painful watch like 2001 which people thought cool but essentialy special effects ~~~~ with not much else)
All i will say is that i heard the budget was low, there where few actors and i expected some serious b-movie man in a rubber suit shennanigans. instead i got something that would rival any major studios efforts and trump them hands down.
Mind = blown. Even after the second watching my head was still reeling with questions and this movie poses a lot of hard ones.
The only major downer i found through the entire experience is knowing that very few people will see this, once youve seen it you'll understand that it wouldnt fit nicely into a trailer without spoiling the entire premise.
And that the handfull of people who do manage to see it will either love it or wind up moaning that there whernt enough transformers and hawt nekkid aliens in it.
Bit of a roadblock that, all i will say is go see the damned thing and dont watch any trailers before hand.
