    IP address

Just wondered, can anyone be traced from a post to an I.P. address by an outsider?

the mods here will know your IP, even if you are hiding behind a proxy.. if what you post was investigated by the police I suppose they would be legally bound to release your IP address to them.. but if you just want to call your boss a pr1ck then he wouldn't be able to find out

The average user would need to apply a few hacks trivial hacks to the board to be able to detect someones IP. This more often than not would be detected by the admin.

Another way around with less accurate reliability would be to sniff a thread, i could probably set up a server that sniffed the ip's of everyone it came in contact with via the signature file.

You know those signatures that tell you your IP address and useragent to your browser/operating system?

      like:

It would be fairly trivial to have this log users, especialy trivial given that forums almost always have Posted by whomever at time:date tags, so its merely a matter of looking through the logs and seeing the ip that corresponds to the timestamp.

All this is fairly pointless however, because in order to get any relevent information you would have to figure out which isp the ip block belongs to (this is straightforward enough although not always accurate) then you would need to gain access to that ISP's logs to backtrace a user account which is far fro strightforward and unless you really and i do mean really know what your doing you will wind up in hot water.

So the question really becomes: has someone pissed you off to the degree that you would be willing to spend some time in jail to trace them online?

there was a case recently in the European courts, regarding file sharing (bit torrent), the ruling of the European Court said "EU member states are not obligated to disclose personal information about suspected file sharers". so i imagine, if torrent site dont have to disclose info about there members, then forums like DK dont have to as well

It would also fly in the face of Article 10 of the European freedom of expression laws, which gives every European the ?freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart information and ideas without interference by public authority and regardless of frontiers.?.

This is why i upload and download all my hardcore child porography over wifi next to McDonnalds whilst parked in my shiny red van with FREE CANDY plastered on the side. I offer a free happy meal toy to every unsuspecting victim.

On a more serious note (and somewhat less disturbing) its neigh on impossable to actualy remain "Anonymous" online. If someone has the motivation and inclination to track you down then more often than not they will. This is getting increasingly easier as peoples "digital footprint" grows.

A few hours with a search engine and i could track down a lot of stuff about a person from simple forum posts, to cross referencing that with social network handles to getting a lot of personal information about a person.

As to the actual use for any of this information, i cant really think of anything usefull id do with it. But im certain that there are people out there willing to pay for stuff like that for one reason or another.

Employers for instance might find it handy to know an awful lot about the person walking into their interview rooms, where pictures of them passed out at a family bbq could effectively end a career. I expect this to be a huge business sector in the near future, some companies already request profiles from applying candidates and even in some cases the login details to those profiles (which is in breach of several laws) especialy considering that the average user will generaly use the same details for all aspects of their digital world, so those account details will be used to access their paypal/bank accounts, forum accounts and all manner of other private and dangerous aspects.

Its disturbing how much information people will willingly post about themselves when under the false pretense that they're anonymous. Information that turns out to be far more frightning than a simple ip address.

I thought it was stupid of the media the other day to show how those child perverts avoided detection for so long. It also gave others ideas(not deliberately) how to avoid future detection.

They showed a diagram how the child perverts used a system of avoidance.
It was on the tv and in the Scottish papers. A bit like naming the sharpshooter who killed a taliban leader(Daily Record/Sun) a couple of months ago. Who the hell is editing the media when there is so much fuss over Jonathen Ross and Co. and they do things like this.

Just wanted to add that even if you got their ip it might not be their ip if they are connecting through another network. Even if a crime was committed it would be really difficult to trace someone using their ip especially if they had connected through a lot of different ip's.

If they want you deperately they will trace you. The only thing you should need to hide on the net is your personal details so that your real life is not pestered by idiots.

I am talking about doing stuff that could harm people not downloading 50 year old music, movies etc.
