I see in the Sun, the fraud case canoe woman was ordered to pay back ?600,000 OR get another 30 months added on her sentence.... err, I think I will take the money.. ?20K a month for sitting in a warm jail, all my meals cooked. Rent the house out while I am inside, afew extra quid.
She will never do the full time anyway, not like she is a threat to society. But, I suppose it better to let out the rapists than an old woman with a pen.

The wife of back-from-the-dead canoeist John Darwin has agreed to repay nearly ?600'000 after the couple faked his death.

Lawyers for Anne Darwin, 57, told a hearing at Leeds Crown Court on Wednesday she would pay back ?591,800 they made when the couple staged her husband's death to claim life insurance and pension money.

The British pair, from Seaton Carew, Teesside, were jailed after the scam.

John Darwin, 58, agreed to pay a nominal sum of ?1 as he has no financial assets.

The couple convinced police, a coroner, financial institutions and even their two sons that he had drowned while canoeing in the North Sea in 2002.

But he had been hidden away in a flat next to his wife's home, and they later embarked on a new life in Panama.

In November 2007 he returned to Britain, telling police he was a missing person with amnesia.

But their cover was blown when a photo of the pair in Panama appeared on the internet.

John Darwin was jailed for six years and three months in July 2008 for deception, while Anne Darwin was jailed for 6? years for fraud and money laundering.

Wednesday's proceedings heard the amount to be repaid was equal to the value of the couple's realisable assets, which were in Anne Darwin's name.

Prosecutor Jolyon Perks said the victims were insurance companies Aviva, formerly known as Norwich Union, and AIG, with claims also made on John Darwin's pension and a Department of Work and Pensions payout.

The victims were to receive a total of ?363,700 in compensation, while a further ?228,100 would be confiscated under the Proceeds of Crime Act.
