93s56 with diy serial port programmer

I have a 93s56 chip that i need to read (and maybe write later). For some reason non of my chip programmers have a option for this chip. Also somebody said that 93s56 chips are "strange" somehow and recommended changing it for a different pin-compatible eeprom. Anybody know why they said that?

Also, is there one of those home-made serial port based programmers (like ponyprog type things?) that i can build right now to read this one chip? I have no experience with these.

This 93s56 have part of data cannot be writed (write protect) .
You can use 93c56 instead but depend on what is for.

Oh, i see, thats why that chip is considered "strange".

The problem is that all the programmers will take time to arrive. Shipping is always slow. I was wondering if there is a simple ponyprog type device i can build today out of junk which i have. Just for this one task.

Take said chip to local radio decoder or dugital milage INcorrection specalist.

read it, save to usb or Tweet yourself, then reload to. 93C46 see what damage it causes

I think somebody i know has a ancient win95 (!) programmer thats so old it has a uv lamp for erasing old chips. For some reason this chip appears in its selection menu, so i might try that.

By the way, i was reading the datasheet and it says that this chip can have write protection on some blocks. Does anybody know, what happens if you try to write it if some blocks are protected? Say you wanted to ffff the whole memory. Will it write f in the not-protected blocks, but keep the original data in the protected blocks? Or will the whole operation fail?
