IU have been off work for 4 monts. I cannot claim jsa contribution allowance as i am self employed. I cannot claim JSA income based because wife works full time. Result no money since the end of sept. Great country we live in.

ive only ever tried to claim once after being made redundant 6 years ago and was turned down then, thats after 22 years of ni contributions.

Ive had exactly the same problem , the wife was working 16 hours a week p/t and bringing home 95 quid (approx) so the benefits system decided that my income based jsa would be a full 10.50p a week bringing the household income to 105 quid a week which is what they recon a couple can live on . They wernt interested that she was paying 15 quid a week to get to work and back .
Basically we were 15 quid a week worse off cos she works

The whole system is ~~~~ed up .

I don't know about you guys but I want to work (am sure you do too) but they don't help by doing what they do to us.

Fearona, I don't care what folk say...this nation of ours has never been great in the eyes of us common folk.

Sharker, the folk that play the system are the ones that don't want to work and are armchair lawyers when it comes to things like that...they just don't help folk like us though because they know that if everyone did it allowances would go down.

Worked all our lives and like a lot of other people over the past 18 months lost our full time jobs through no fault of our own . So the way i see it , ive paid it in so now im claiming it back up untill the time i gain full time empolyment again .

if you want money you will have to leave her (pretend too anyway) claim as single at your mothers for instance

then you will get your money again and she may get some help with here rent/mortgage too

im having the same probs my wife only works 15 hours a week but is a carer for her nanna who is 85 this earns her ?50 per week on top of her ?380 per month wages and entitles us to jack 5hit basically

failing that try going on the sick you will get your ?64 a week at least till you have been assesed anyway (providing you have payed enough stamp)

i do feel for you, they base it on last years earnings too. i was laid offa couple of years ago. they based everything on the year before so wasnt entitled to anything, thats with a new born at home too, couldnt claim rent as i had a mortgage, the list goes on. the best thing is to say you are split up but living in the same house for financial reasons. you stay in seperate rooms. someone will have to inspect the house to make sure it looks coacha. thats what me and the wife done.

I was in the exact same situation Fearona.

Out of work 4 months with sweet f**k all with the missus moaning constantly, and its not like i wasnt shifting my ass looking. i Applied for EVERYTHING, even stated id give em a month free whilst i underwent training and the likes with nothing but rejection after spirit crushing rejection.

Worse still i couldnt even afford to get pished to make my self feel remotely normal for a few hours

All this and the guy down the road whos never worked a day in his life is living the life of riley selling heroin and making a fortune.

Its a sad state of affairs when theres nothing out there for an honest man

Yea it's a sad state of affairs when you have to resort to this to make ends meet. Like many people here i know loads of people who know how to "manipulate the system" shall we say.

It's always the ones who have never worked and come out with classics like " It's not worth my while working for that" " I wouldn't get out of bed for that money" and " i'm entitled to..."
The people who have always worked and find themselves out of work now are always the ones who find themselves out in the cold.

Busted a gut over the past 6 months (and before) to get a job but no such luck. My neighbours (who don't work) managed to have a 2 week holiday in Florida with their young 'uns for Xmas. Where is the bloody justice?

DC mate, I would be the unlucky bugger that got caught trying that one
