    Oscar Nominations

What do you all think about the oscar nominations? The media are having us believe that Avatar and Hurt Locker are the favs for best pic.

IMHO it would be an absolute travesty if Avatar were to win. If it were judged purely on special effects then fair enough, but you can't let the special effects or 3 dimensionality override the fact that the film was absolutely crap with no plot.

The Oscars are a load of bollix to be honest.
Take away the special effects from Avatar and what are you left with ? A B movie with a childish 2 dimensional script.
Its like the Academy dont give a damn anymore as to what gets nominated or even wins.
Camerons' best films like Terminator,Terminator 2,Aliens and True Lies were shunned for awards while drivel like Titanic cleaned up.
Its farcical that Avatar is being nominated.
Hurt Locker is a good movie but it wasnt the best film I saw in 2009 .
Up in the Air was very average, how its in the running in so many categories I just dont know.
I can never understand why individual films like Avatar and Hurt Locker get so many nominations.
Its not like they were outstanding in every area .
Every year the nominees seem to be getting worse.

The best film of 2007, by far, was "Das Leben der Anderen" (The Lives of Others). This did win Best Foreign Film, but I have to ask why it wasn't nominated for Best Film? It was well better than anything Hollywood produced. I can only suggest that it doesn't count because it's German, which makes a mockery of what is supposed to be the most prestigious film award in the world, if the best films are excluded for no other reason than because they're foreign.

IMO the 2 best films last year were District 9 and Precious. They're both nominated, but we all know neither will win.

But thats the whole point of the Oscars and why there are so many categories to it. Avatar may win for 3D or soundtrack or even opening titles but the award is based on those facts.

The Oscars are a back slapping routine for the US film industry .
The Academy are completely insular and patriotic.
Its just like the Grammys in music, totally biased towards American acts.
