    Think(?) Tank

    Here we go again.
Some left-wing think tank has decided that, to cure the UK's financial woes, a 21 hour working week is the answer.
What planet are these people on? For someone on minimum wage and governed by the European Wage Directive (crap) this means a 57% drop in wages.
So who meets the mortgage and loan payments? The banks?
Given the crisis in the banking sector, it's guaranteed that the ordinary punter will be held responsible.
Has anyone ever thought of a society without money??

    All the damned time.

A lot of capitalist jobs go directly to supporting capitalism and perpetuating the system. Accountants, Lawyers, Stock brokers, Bankers etc all become useless overnight if money dissapeared.
They contribute absoloutly nothing of any tangible value to society.

So in effect that would free all of them up to do usefull jobs like unclogging toilets and scraping the shit off sewer mains.

    Screw democracy and capitalism.
Not that id suggest communism is any better either, id aim for a meritocracy, whereby people got elected based on merrit, instead of which companies paid them most for their campaigns media coverage.

The first thing id do if i got into power in this day and age would be to ABOLISH all pay to government officials.
See how many greasy *****s want to run for office when they have to rely on good will public donations for survival.
Governance will be purely voluntary, no big houses, large expense accounts, fancy meals and cars.
See how many crooked ****ers want the job then.

This would ensure that anyone in power would actualy have to work at earning their wage. Public thinks your a shitty little self serving dick? guess what you starve to death

These think tank quangos all live in ivory towers and are completely out of touch with reality. I agree with the sentiments of chroma in so far as a 21 hour week would actually do more damage to the economy(less spending power= less spending). The sad thing is that these B*****d quangos actually get paid for coming up with such S**T.

Would abolishing money be the answer?
The quangoes and all government officials would be in their jobs because they wanted to make a difference, not to keep their snouts in the trough.
There is one value common to all: time. Given that those who actually create the wealth on which these parasites feed are paid the least, could a society not exist where everyone is recompensed by the hours they devote to their jobs, irrespective of their heirachical position?
Much is said about education, but many people working in 'menial' jobs have degrees, so why should they be paid a pittance? Let the fat cats work for minimum wage or devise a system whereby everyone is recompensed at the same rate. Why should 90% of the wealth of the UK be in the hands of 60% of the population??

            off topic, but whatever.

somebody came in and said in what ever country it was, ALL your wages go to the church, but if you need new dishwasher, tv etc the church pays for it.

If was a tiny village and everybody started with 1 tv, small car etc then fair enough.

              not a quango

Shorter working week soon inevitable, forecasts nef | the new economics foundation

some people are now working 60 hour weeks, which prevents others from getting any kind of work.

not so long ago people said the national minimum wage would loose thousands of jobs.
things will have to change in the future and this is just one option
