THOUSANDS of Scots watching free cable telly using illegal 'chipped' boxes have been cut off by Virgin Media bosses.
The company has beefed up its encryption, making the counterfeit decoders useless - and leaving moochers in the lurch.
Virgin rolled out the new software across England late last year and is now expanding to Scotland.
Last night an insider said: "People who have these dodgy boxes will be losing the services they are stealing.
"The guys who make the boxes have been selling them at cut price on eBay knowing full well they will soon be useless. People thinking of buying these boxes should realise they are being conned out of their money.
"The new encryption makes it impossible for people to steal services - the only way to get them now is to become a legitimate customer."
The firm said customers will get upgraded smartcards. A spokesman said: "We are concerned that members of the public are being misled by sellers of unauthorised equipment."
