    clapton versus hendrix

why do so many people claim jimi hendrix as the worlds greatest guitarist. while i admit that jimi was a very talented guitarist i believe that he never fullfilled his full potential as he died young. eric clapton on the other hand has been playing at the top for 5 decades and is getting better with age. eric has spanned different genres of music including rock pop and blues and more than 30 albums published. jimi hendrix if he was still alive would no doubt be classed as the greatest ever but due to erics achievments in his lifetime i believe the accolade is his but what do you think.

my top five guitarists of all time are
    1/ eric clapton
    2/ jimi hendrix
    3/ jimmy paige
    4/ gary moore
    5/ mark knopler

mark knopler... with all due respect he does not deserve to be on this list...

I adore Eric Clapton and he is my favorite since I know for my self but to compare Eric and Jimmy we need someone with more knowledge.

There is no doubt that Eric is the best alive guitar player...

but, Jimmy came on the earth through the black hole of time for a little while just to show us how to play guitar and he left...

Does any one of you plays guitar?

its my opinion mate that mark knopler is in the top five nothing more. yes i have played accoustic guitar for years now but nevr really mastered it. goto youtube and watch dire straits from the nelson mandela birthday tribute 1988.
it was at this concert i realised how great knopler was.his playing on brothers in arms made the hair on my neck stand up and brought a tear to my eye, ive never heard such emotion comming from the axe.

You are right m8. I am not saying he is bad, just the guys from 1-4 are far better than him. I also like Mark Knopler and Dire Straits. I have a few concerts including the one you have mentioned. If you need I will be glad to share it with you.

thanks steppenwolf i too have been erics greatest fan but i agree with you that i am not technically gifted enough to make the comparison. ive always thought americans would say jimi and brits would say eric due to the vietnam thing and hendrix's music. ive always thought mark knopler and dave gilmour are the worlds most underated guitarists and gilmour would be sixth on my list.

In spite of the bad press recently... my favorite would be Pete Townshend . And thats what this is all about...your own favorite. Hendrix, Knoffler, Clapton,Richards,May etc. are brilliant in their own right ie the particular type of band/music they play but then these bands are/were world known. On the subject of ...do I play guitar...yes, but I was the stubborn type who had to self learn which still sees me delighting myself when I get my head round a new (acoustic) tune. Once again johnboy, enjoy your concert tomorrow.

everbody makes their own argument for the best, and why not after all its a matter of personal taste. Just in case anybody is interested mine is Rory Gallagher, for me he is number one but then its my choice.
Why cant we get together and make our personal favourites a fabulous cd

my dad would say hendrix by a mile he can play with either hand too with the guitar upside down or the correct way and also with his teeth

they are all great guitarists in there own right the best depends on which music you like the best i grew up with hendrix, clapton, gilmore, moore, satriani, steve vai the lot and they are all good but they are not my thing although i do like a lot of it

for the record i think mark knopfler is excellent

if i was gona pick my personal fave i would pick kirk hammet from metallica is he better than any of the above to me yes because i prefer the music to the rest of it although i havent had a metallica album since 1991 the previous 5 were good enough for me
