The argument is that people who are in a vegetative state are unable to make a concious decision. Also there would be no proof that they did want to die. Same for terminally ill people, its a minefield of morality.

Personally, I think they should be allowed to make their own choice, and if that means killing themselves, then I am fine with that.

a difficult question for this time in the ~~~~in mornin...

i think it should be based on a case by case basis.
anyone terminally ill wanting to die, then fair enough. i have seen a family member slowly wasting away and dying over a ten year period with a horrible incurable disease. its a terrible thing to witness. my worst nightmare is something like that happenin to me.
belive me, i would end my life, law or no law....
As for persistant vegative state cases or people severly braindamaged or paralysed, unable to communicate.
            this is more difficult.
i think the the question here should be "how far do we go with medical care?"
modern medicine is fantastic, but can go too far.
is there any point in keepin someone alive, but unconcious or unable to communicate or move at all?
            this is the real question.
this is not a life, but more of a living death.... (in my opinion)

i don't think your question can be answered with a simple yes or no, but it should be an interesting thread if everybody respects each others opinion...

i think trust comes in to this as well regarding doctors and people who work within this field. i agree people should have the right to choose weather to live or die in cases wheres there is no cure, as for patients who cant make this decision for them selves, who does really have the last word family or the law.
i for one would end my days given the choice. i too have seen family members and friends suffer terrible with a certain illness over the years so that's made my mind up.
and to anyone who is going through anything that relates to this thread you have my deepest sympathy..maca

The problem is, that medical care is so good these days, that they can prolong peoples lives for much longer. Whether that be fair or not, its what they are trained for. Its a catch 22 in a lot of situations.

Personally, I would prefer to die.

Supporting life by mechanical/pneumatic machinery is not natural. It is only beneficial , in my opinion , if it prolongs life enough for the next of kin to say their farewells which in itself helps the mourning process. But that is a seperate/related issue to the question asked.
We make choices every day in life and we live with the outcomes of those decisions. I think, therefore, that we should be allowed the same choice at the time of our departure and that choice should be respected.
As for somebody, who through accident/illness,who cannot make the choice themselves ,that`s the gray area.
A person in a vegetative state is not existing in any form of living as we should be and supporting that state is obscene in my opinion.

it should always be up to the individual to decide not law IMO if as janobi said the person is unresponsive or in a vegative state it should be up to the nearest and dearest too decide

my personal choice if left in a state of effectively being brain dead would be too die

if our pets are ill we put them out of there misery there is nothing humane about watching anyone human or animal suffer

whats the point of living if you cant live ?
