Getting your boiler serviced?

I've been my house for nearly 3 years now and we've never had any probs with our boiler. But just for safety I was thinking about getting it services.

Does anyone know how to go about this without joining a homecare plan etc. I had a look on the British Gas website but couldn't find any one off service options, it was all monthly homecare subscriptions.

Any corgi registered fitter should be able to service it for you. I just have a plan with boiler maker though.

I know that they were offering a boiler service for ?45 during the summer but this offer is no longer available and there is no info on their website as you say.

We have had ours serviced about once and all the chap did was use a vacum cleaner to some dust out of it. Then he drained it whilst running and refilling it, when it starts draining clean water he stopped.

Now we just get an annual care plan from npower and let them deal with any breakdowns, the AON energy plans are decent as well. Get the plan with unlimited callouts and repairs. A few years back we had a different policy with a cap on costs and it soon fizzled away as the Valiant guys could not figure out what was wrong with the boiler.

as stated my mcmav glen m8 any corgi registered gas fitter can service them for you, and tbh i would rather pay a local corgi gas fitter than the robbing ~~~~ers of british gas/npower etc

I take the cover off mine once a year and hoover out,top-up water via pressure valve,they aint gonna do much else in a service.
Otherwise its bust i call someone out to fix.

Hmmm there has gotta be a good mother-in-law joke to made out of this boiler issue...

Anyway, as the guys say, get a corgi plumber to come round and service your boiler and ask for a Gas Safety Certificate.

If it's an old boiler that has never given you any probs, may be better to do nothing.

If you go with british gas, make sure the person they send are employed by them and not a third party contractor.

You could try
CORGI Gas Engineers for gas boilers, ovens and CP12 certificates
and see what they quote

your better off with a third party contractor (such as me!!) british gas engineers are all trained in house,all their qualifications are in hose,and they are all inspected in house, self employed engineers have to pay for and take exams thereselves, and be independantly inspected, plus a local self employed engineer cares (or should do) about the quality of the job in hand as if it isnt up scratch you wont get paid, when you work for a big company your on a wage and what does it matter if i dont service your boiler properly, cause wagesre still there come friday....nothing personal about british gas engineers just my opinion

I was talking to a work mate about boiler services the other day.. and he says E.D.F. will do a one off service you pay so much..and parts and labour are inclueded but i canonot remember how much he paid.hope this helps..

I went to a local company which insalls boilers and they did an annual plan which includes a service for 75pds, so speak to local companies.

Hi there, am in the same boat as I grudge giving scottish gas etc the money as it is a waste of time. If you are worried about saftey, make sure you have a carbon monoixde alarm in your kitchen or near your boiler.That will give you piece of mind. As for your services, check your local paper, due to the current credit crunch you should find somebody quite reasonable priced as long as they are corgi registered. Also make sure you get a exact price on the job as you do get the odd chancer out there. Many thanks..

i find plumbers to be a bit dodgy and if you had no problem with your boiler you probably will a few month down the line if you know what i mean

if you can try to get a service manual for your boiler and try it yourself i do i dont think they do much more than check over dust down and hoover

bleeding,draining and setting the correct pressure all straight forward simple tasks

i realise there are a few decent plumbers out there but from family experience over the years something always seems to happen not long after they have been so then they are called out for repair's

so i have always steered clear i only get them in when its neccesary the only people i would trust is if you were on a plan eg british gas as its not in there interests to come out again
