LOL i just know how middle management think, I had 6 managers constantly on my case for 4 drawn out years, spending more time arguing over policy and employment legislation than I did actually working.
I read through my contract and employee policies pretty much weekly, started phoning round competitors workplaces posing as a journalist and quizzing them on their policies and procedures just so i could talk my way out of "its common industry practice" nonsense whilst backing myself up to the hilt.
Then the old boy died and i had to take a leave to deal with funeral stuff then finances and the like, wound up getting sacked over it, its the only way they could get me. Believe you me they tried everything else
It was fun though, I learned a hell of a lot about just how far middle management would go and how little they actually knew about both company policy and employment law in general.
The fact is you stuck it to the man, you've made yourself an example to the lower echelons of the working man and that means they might think for themselves and stick up for their rights, that's a dangerous thing when your a manager and need to have full control.
There's nothing more dangerous in a heard of sheep than one who thinks independently from the company propaganda. You've just flagged yourself as a threat.
I used to swagger into that room smiling, sit down and lean back fully relaxed as if to say "MON EN! im in charge here!" watch them begin to sweat as I eye-balled every ****er in the room. then snickered as they resorted to their training by finding an excuse to leave the room and apply the "sweat tactic" leave you alone for anywhere up to an hour in complete isolation in a sweaty room in an effort to make you pliable.
Thankfully I don't get bored, used to count holes in the tiles, then recount with the ones covered with paint, then start dividing things in my head
They swaggered back in after an hour usually in full power posture desperately groping for control, only to find me completely relaxed, in exactly the same leaning back position, grinning and asking if they found whatever the hell they where looking for.
Ready and waiting to give vague answers to a list of questions asked three different ways, in an effort to trap you into a contradiction.
Once you realise its all just a game of mental chess you begin to enjoy yourself, so long as you can get emotionally detached, answer vaguely to give yourself some maneuvering room later down the line, and keep to a slow steady monotone, keep your face like putty and maintain strong eye contact you pretty much guarantee yourself a win.
they become enraged and begin to lose control, someone eventually winds up shouting "YOUR TREATING THIS LIKE A COURT CASE WHEN ITS NOT." they always do.
then you know your in control.
I just used to state bluntly "Im aware its not a court case, yet." just to see their eyes widen.
Or the usual "Why are you being so defensive/ emotional." Statements supposedly to break a man down and gain an emotional response.
Just look whomever straight in the eye, show nothing and respond "I'm merely answering the questions posed to the best of my ability, I'm simply trying to be cooperative." and watch em froth at the mouth
The deck is always stacked in the companies favour, so long as you can keep yourself metered and controlled, you can systematically remove every card from the table.
Ive seen every play in the book, had people throw things at my face, scream and bawl, break down into tears, punch walls, the lot! Every time ive either terminated the "meeting" or just smiled whilst leaning back, knowing I've just won
