A mobile mast usually has 4 emitters, north south east & west (although not always that precise). One mast can cover a 4 mile radius depending if the emitters are covering all sides. Any or all of those emitters can develop a fault, or the control links can cock up.
So if a local site has a fault, either everyone has a problem or only those people caught in the 90 degree coverage from a particular emitter will suffer.
The best thing to do is get out of the area & check your phone again. It is possible that there can be other problems not associated with the local site. But most would result in you having a signal but not able to make/receive calls or texts.
EDIT.
Just read some of the other posts since I started this. It sounds like a HLR (Home Location Register) is out. This is the point where all your connections are routed through, no matter where you are in the country. It could be temporary, but if you try to call Voda I'd expect a long wait until to get to speak to anyone.

Millions of Vodafone customers in southern England lost services when burglars smashed their way into a building and stole vital network equipment.
The raiders entered the building in Basingstoke, Hampshire, early on Monday morning and took or damaged the network and IT hardware, causing services to crash, said Vodafone.
There was a loss of voice, text and internet access across the south for millions of customers of the mobile phone giant.
A Vodafone spokesman said voice services were now up and running with text and data also due to be working soon.
"We had a break-in last night at one of our technical facilities which resulted in damage done to some of our equipment," the spokesman explained.
"This means that some customers may be experiencing temporary loss of voice, sms and internet services. We are working quickly to restore these and will be back to normal as soon as we can. There has been no impact on the privacy of customers' data."
Hampshire police officers said they were called to the property at 5am and that the raid was a targeted attack.
Detective Sergeant Lee McClellan, from Basingstoke CID, said: "We are still in the very early stages of our investigation but at this stage it appears to be a targeted attack on these premises.
"We are conducting a number of inquiries but would like to hear from anyone who may have seen a vehicle in the Houndsmill area during the early hours of Monday morning, or any vehicles stopped on the A339."
Just to clarify this regarding the disruption of services, it has not impacted the entire network (or millions of customers) as you suggest. In total, this impacted 3.2% of our customer base primarily in the M4/M3 corridor areas (Vodafone currently has approx 19 million customers in the UK), although for those affected the disruption lasted several hours and we can confirm that all services have now been restored.

it was a news report on the web which i picked up, it also included a quote from somebody within vodaphone, as members of this forum in the south were having difficulty in using the network and posted it as a explanation for the problem they were having.

Ever get the impression that big companies have slaves chained to computers searching out bad publicity... Then set about smothering it over with numbers & misdirection.
