Well buy a travel kettle so your less likly to need such a big one

Would personally look into a 12 tv and if you can 12 volt sat box.

If you buy a faulty generator MAKE SURE it's the engine that has gone not the generation bit, as rule they burn out and game over, do NOT buy one that has been used to run a welder. (Unless it's like G10 delivered).

Single cyclinder diesel, buy a blow torch to warm it first, unless you have muscles, but best electric start diesel one.

depending how long the blackouts usually last you could do as meathead says with some 12 volt appliances but instead of a genny get a couple of leisure batteries and some small but not too small solar panels to keep them topped up. in my caravan i have two leisure batts, one at 85 amp hours and other at 100 amp hours, i have two small solar car battery top up panels they are about 1.5 watts each so tiny really ,( ill be upgrading them later) the two solar panels do keep the batteries topped up but if i use a lot of power itd take days to recover, i have a 12 volt freeview box, a 12 volt tv (15 inch) and a 3g router so i can also use my skybox (not original sky) as thats 12 volt too, so in theory if the power goes in the house i can migrate to the caravan and use the resources there altho for a limited time untill i updrage the solar chargers.
similar could be done in the house tho, just use the 12 volt system, when the mains goes out, less noisy and doesnt use any fuel. plus when the powers on you could trickle charge the leisure batteries and use the solar to add a bit extra when you are using them.

So why is your post count so low?

Catikid, ignore the price last time i looked were ?18 in hand, this is a better picture to look at, that way you can at least get your pc working on pure 12 volt alone

        Code:
        [url=http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pico-PSU-120-12V-120W-DC-DC-ATX-power-supply-Mini-ITX-/190451114205?pt=PCA_UPS&hash=item2c57c560dd#ht_2318wt_721]Pico PSU-120 12V 120W DC-DC ATX power supply Mini ITX | eBay[/url]
You could go for a UPS but replace the battery with said lesiure ones, that way automatic one mains goes off, no intreruption of DK

3G modem sounds good as if street goes off, even if you power modem seperatly will you still have access to DK?

Sounds slightly daft, but if your getting freqwuent power cuts bring the freeze cable out on 'two' extenshion leads, so you can plug into genny, hit 'fast freeze' save the fuel for DK then

i have too many tvs in house already, might look at the freesat boxes i have to check voltage,no harm in having something ready for winter,i have somewhere a solar battery tricke charger somewhere, leisure battery sounds expensive.cheers folks food for thought.

if u have a smaller tv allready check if its an external power supply, some of the smaller tvs have a 12 volt adapter and some dont, i got lucky and mine did so i replaced that with a 12 volt power cable i made, so now i can use that one with mains or 12 volt.
leisure batteries can be expensive but they are better for longer term use than a car battery but you can use a car battery for anything 12 volt. they just dont last as long but useable in a power cut if you have 12 volt appliances.
and the 12 volt solar trickle charger could be used with a car battery to help it stay topped up (charge it from normal mains first then use the solar cell just to keep it there, then use it when needed.
was the same with my freeview box it had an external adapter,,, lucky huh... i did find if you specifically go out to get 12 volt stuff they charge you a lot more for that whereas just check appliances in the shop to see if its used thru an adapter...

its all fun really and best to be ready for dday if it ever comes... i know i can switch to 12 volt quite quickly and still have access to sky tv, altho if the zombies were banging at the door i dont think tv would be my priority ... but could keep an eye on sky news to see what cities have been overrun by dead liveing beings eating other beings...

                ok getting ridiculous now ...

                      ON TOPIC:-

Think you might be ble to find information on INFERIOR websites about converting car alternator to 240 volts

Might be worth look on ebay at old refridirated vans, as sometimes they have a second dynamo to make 240 for the fride then just plug in mains at night

another option,,, some generators can be run on mains or lpg gas with a simple conversion, of course there are companies that will charge u an arm and a leg for the conversion kit but its basically a regulator and a few pipes, build one yourself with youtubes help.....
so the theory is, if the electric goes you can power the genny from the mains gas rather than buying fuel for it, hook that up to the main fuse box and bobs yr uncle....

or if no mains gas use a gas cylinder, or as one youtube guy did woodburner with a gasifier hooked up to create his own gas from burning wood,, how cool is that .

i just did an experiment on my leisure batteries which i thought were being topped up with the solar panels, well they are getting some charge form my tiny panels (1.5 watts x 2) but i plugged in my special battery charger and it showed voltage as 11.6 ish, and if the panels had been doing the job they should have been 12v up wards. but charge the batts up by mains then use when the mains dies hopefully they last longer than the outage..

so now i need an upgraded solar panel, which i have seen at ?100 for an 80 watt. but id probably get a 60 watt about the same price to make sure it would work in low light conditions as well.
