    Electric meter

Possibly not on the right forum for this but we have just moved home and upon going to check the electric meter to "top up" the credit as its a pay as you go type there appeared to be a large strong magnet attached to one side of the meter. Why would this be here? I assume it's been placed here on purpose and should I remove it? Lastly is it worth mentioning this to the electrical company for any reason? Any help or answers appreciated. Quite STRANGE!! I'll try upload a pic

    Awesome.

hundrads of years ago with disc meters myth was it stopped the meter spinning, but the discs were aluminium and magnet had no effect, but rumor has it slows the gears down.

rumor also stated that once magnet removed it spin twice as fast, thus more cost.

as a rule modern meters 'can't be tampered with as they flash up 'tampered'

to test thus therory find some scumbag who spends their dole money on beer, wait till winter, kick their pre pay. GAS meter, watch it shut down and say tamper.

electirc meters if you bypass one you MUST do neural and live, if they not they flash tampered . Rumor.

if your going to try, blu tack an infra red led on the data port, all this does is freeze the meter, but its still counting down, one led off the ?50 you used it asks for it.

if you manage to get hold of the software PLEASE upload it. Use laptop with ir port to change rate.

hmm might be worth mentioning to leccy company, if some one has tried to tamper with it before you moved in they might blame you when they come to look at the meter which they will sooner or l8r. ( moved to home and garden where it belongs )

They bypass the bill ... If you want to do this then leave it on there but if you don't want to end up with a bill I would call them tell them what's happen and they will sort it out

I had a mate a few years ago who used a piezo on the side of his payment meter.
Everytime he shocked the meter it would add between 20p and 50p to his credit.
              Saved himself a fortune.

these magnets work for the intended purpose and do not raise any flags once removed, they only work on the pre pay meters btw

In Uropee especially in Czech Republic the older meters was possibly modified with big magnet.
But only between peak hours vs night. Magnet makes it always on the low mode. So company reads the meter (magnet MUST NOT BE THERE!!!) and charge you lower price even in peak hours.
Duno where U live, but keep in mind that can do something to the relays inside the meter.
Me personally wouldn't call power company ( in emerica DWP big s*it!!!!) yet
                      Just figure out wth.
                      Cheers

what about outside gasmeters that are normally located just on your wall at the front garden ?

If someone was to come in and smash the part that has the dials/display thing through vandalism then what would happen there ? The meters usually have a plastic box round them that has a key that everyone owns so that they can check thier own reading, but what if a person was to check it and find that the plastic door was unlocked by said key and that kids had vandalised the meter display and no way to see a reading on it, what would happen under those circumstances I wonder ?

Wait till the depth of a cold winter and find out. If a prepay it will lock out, no gas unti bloke from German gas resets it

                            eh ?

its not prepay, I think it just have the dials that turn round, these meter boxes are usually left unlocked by the guys that come out to get a reading, but each household has their own key too, the little key is standard to open the lid, I have often wondered what if someone tampered with a meter like that, you know like the crazy kids that go about breaking things for the fun of it etc, its only a matter of time before one of them smash the little parts on the meters that have the dials that turn round, I don't know what the gas companies would think about that, I guess they would just replace the meter next time they came to read it and noticed damage etc, but I dunno how long that would all take to process and I wonder if the householder would still get billed for their average usage, I cant see how they could do that because what if the people left the house for say 6 months or a year etc, that way no gas would be used, know what I mean ?
