      Yeah, same here,

      OFF TOPIC:-

One upon a time cars were simple to work on, then some twat invented
a 'body computer' to control the car, then they all do it now - even
      EC Regulations - tossers

      ON TOPIC:-

Once somebody invents a new word they all use it.

Tsunamis have been around for millions of years and happen more regularly than most realise. It's just that very few cause any real damage. The planet is made up of Tectonic plates (huge masses of land each) a bit like the scales on a reptile. They were formed as the planet cooled. Each plate is made up of different densities of rock. Where these plates but against each other is called a fault line. The plates move a few centimetres each year and if one plate is denser than the other it gets forced under the abutting late. Obviously these plates aren't smooth so it can take a lot of pressure for theses plates to slip under the other. Imagine compressing two blocks of ice against each other. Eventualy one will fracture if it is less dense than the other and this fracture gives out an immense amount of energy. If this happens with a plate under the sea it can lift or drop the sea bed and this is what causes the massive waves. Nothing to do with other planets, aliens etc. Just bog standard Geology. This is a good example [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Xebwzb3dDE&feature=related"]YouTube - Animation of Earthquake and Tsunami in Sumatra[/ame]

The last time a super moon happened was two weeks after the tsunami you?re talking about, in 2004.
I intend to live forever - so far so good.

I think I'm begining to buy into this 2012 thing... There is supposed to be an increase in natural disasters - we have had 3 in short succession (floods in Oz, Quake in NZ and now Japan) and unexplainable happenings - recently the thousands of birds falling from the sky, the whales beached, the thousands of fish crammed into that habour etc etc. Shit!

Onto thread, truly, truly devastating whats happened in Japan. To the Japanese - may your God be with you.

A tsunami is caused by an earthquake

An earthquake is caused by tectonic plates rubbing together

what has the moon got to do with it, I agree the moon has an influence on the tides, but I don't see the correlation with tsunami's, or earthquakes,
the word, supermoon has only been about since 1979, coined by an astronomer, probably the same ones who came up with the 2012 end of the world theory,
this is mother nature doing what she has been doing for millennia, and will carry on doing,
considering we get a full moon every 29 days, it is easy to associate it to all sorts of problems like mental illness (lunacy),
some ancient cultures used to believe it was the full moon that caused women to menstruate, but we don't any longer, it's all folklore.

The earth is attracted to the most massive thing in the sky, the sun, its pulled towards it by gravity.
If there was no moon then the tide would predominantly be highest at the point facing the sun, not always though, the earth is also attracted to other orbiting bodies, the more massive the more the effect.
So at certain points the tidal effect towards the sun would be cancelled out when theres planetary alignment, that is to say when the sun is on one side and Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and the rest are on the other, this will be more pronounced the further Mercury and Venus are (like if they where on the opposite side of the sun)
Because orbits are elliptical this also varies the effect, when planets are in alignment and on close orbits the effect will be more pronounced than when the planets are at their apexes.

This is without even involving the moon, with the moon because its close it has a more noticeable effect and acts as a counter balance, even moreso when its in direct alignment with the other planets on a shallow orbit, more still when the moons on a shallow orbit itself.

The effect is that the planet feels like its being pulled in half by the gravitational forces. the effect is viable with liquids like the oceans tides, but bear in mind that the earth is also liquid centred too, continents are nothing more than lumps of rock skinning a liquid core which is also changing shape in relation to gravitational forces, which is why there's an effect one continent gets pulled towards the sun whilst another gets pulled towards the moon and other orbiting bodies.

                    Make more sense now?

add in to the mix the fact that the earth isn't a steady distance nor stable axis from the sun and you get a warming and cooling effect which expands and contracts the joints and you begin to form a fuller picture.
All the while the tectonic plates (ie: joints) are expanding and contracting whilst gravity is also ripping them apart.
Things get fatigued and start to slip.
Earthquakes happen and when they're under water (which is most of the time) they displace water.

The moon and sun both play massive roles in how our planet acts, not just down to the tides.

amazing footage of the tragedy on sky news, but they spoilt it somewhat at 1720 by broadcasting an advert about "riding the wave" for a holiday in Barbados

the post was about the effect of the supermoon no mention of the sun,

I remember similar scare stories in 1982, when some astronomers where predicting earthquakes worldwide, even promising that California would slip into the ocean on March 10, 1982.

A little known fact.... Casino's lose more money during a full moon than at any other time in a month.

When did we stop using the english noun 'tidal wave' & started using 'tsunamis' instead? They both have exactly the same meaning... only one is a twat to spell.

Don't think this will be forgotten for a long time to come, i can't believe there are whole generations of families possibly been wiped out in one foul swoop.
Sky reported this morning in part of there excellent coverage and reporting on this disaster that thousands of bodies were washed up on the beach this morning, the sea is sure unforgiving in it's search for lives of un suspecting people taken in it's wrath.

Add to the disaster of the earthquake and the tsunami we now have the added threat of the nuclear reactors possibly going into meltdown, this could cause massive damage out-with Japan, all we can do is hope and pray that they get the reactors under control and start rebuilding the country once again.
