    G20 jury returns verdict of unlawful killing

    Ian Tomlinson, the newspaper vendor, was unlawfully killed by a police officer at the G20 protests, a jury at his inquest has ruled.
    The Crown Prosecution Service, which last year decided that no one would be prosecuted in relation to the death, is to review its decision in the light of evidence heard at the inquest.
    Mr Tomlinson, 47, collapsed and died during the demonstrations in central London in April 2009.
    Amateur video evidence, which was later beamed around the world, showed Mr Tomlinson being shoved to the ground by a police officer, Simon Harwood, as he walked away from police lines with his hands in his pockets. He had not been involved in the protests.
    The inquest jury took four and a half hours to return their verdict. Other possible options for the jury included an open verdict, death by natural causes and misadventure.
    The CPS said on Tuesday its review would be thorough and take place as quickly as possible.
    ***8220;It will take into account all of the evidence now available, including any new evidence that emerged at the inquest, the issues left by the coroner to the jury and the conclusions they reached,***8221; the CPS said in a statement.
    Jules Carey of Tuckers Solicitors, representing the Tomlinson family, said: ***8220;Today***8217;s decision is a huge relief to Mr Tomlinson***8217;s family.
    ***8220;To many, today***8217;s verdict will seem like a statement of the blindingly obvious; however, this fails to take account of the significant and many obstacles faced by the family over the last two years to get to this decision.
    ***8220;The CPS will now review whether a prosecution will be brought following today***8217;s verdict and the way in which the evidence has been clarified during the inquest process.***8221;
    Last year Keir Starmer, the director of public prosecutions, sparked outrage when he said he would not bring any charges against the officer relating to the death of Mr Tomlinson.
    Scotland Yard said on Tuesday Mr Tomlinson***8217;s death was ***8220;a matter of deep regret***8221;.
    Rose Fitzpatrick, deputy assistant commissioner at the Metropolitan Police, expressed her ***8220;profound condolences***8221; to family members.
    Speaking after the unlawful killing verdict was returned, she said: ***8220;It is a matter of deep regret that the actions of an***8201;.***8201;.***8201;.***8201;officer have been found to have caused the death of a member of the public.***8221;
    She added: ***8220;As announced last year, misconduct proceedings will now be launched against PC Harwood.

    On the topic
    Mr Tomlinson family without the amateur video evidence could not have won this unlawfully killing by a police officer when director of the public procecuter Keir Starmer was outrage when he said he would not bring any charges, whats your comment following todays verdict?

      Generally the police do a pretty good job under some very stressful circumstances. We shouldn't tar them all with the same brush. The officer in this case went too far, and I'm sure he's painfully aware of that now.

        The Rule of Law will prevail.
        They think they own the law but one day there is always that one day you run out of luck and the real long arm of the law will prevail.
        My condolence to the Tomlinson family.
