Siwanowicz, spent seven years breeding mantises and other bugs at his home. Among his favourites is a giant Malaysian shield praying mantis striking a pose in which it is delicately balanced on four legs, with its front legs stretched wide open.

And the so-called plain mantis looks anything but as it displays its yellow and black markings in contrast to scarlet wings.
Mr Siwanowicz, of Munich in Germany, says he regards mantises as ?slick and sexy?. He adds his main influence is the Swiss surrealist designer Hans Rudolf Giger, who won an Oscar in 1980 for creating the Alien in the film series.
