Horrific ordeal of grandfather, 80




These are the shocking images of an 80-year-old grandfather who was beaten black and blue when he was mugged of his bus pass and hearing aid in broad daylight.

In the violent assault, steelworker Derrick Jones was pushed to the ground outside a primary school where he smashed his face on the pavement in the horrific attack.

He was left with black eyes, severe cuts, damage to his eyesight, bruising to his face and a fractured left thumb.

Despite the injuries inflicted upon him Derrick Jones managed to keep hold of his wallet

Despite the assault, he bravely clung onto his wallet leaving the callous thief with just his bus pass and hearing aid.

Nearly two weeks after the robbery, police have still not tracked down the attackers who struck at 11am on April 27 outside a St Woolos Primary School in Newport, South Wales.

Derrick said he was walking along the pavement when he heard someone running up behind him before he was pushed to the ground.

He was left dazed, severely shaken and lying face down for about five minutes before someone came to his aid.

The father of five said the shock of the attack could have killed someone his age but that he was determined not to let it make him live in fear.

He said: 'I did not know what to think. The shock at my age could have killed me. I was just shaking all over.

Mr Jones was left with bad bruising to his face and now has trouble with his eyesight

'It has left me with some problems with my sight but I'm not going to hide away in my home just because of this.'

A neighbour dialled 999 and he was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital where he was treated for his injuries and later released.

Police are now searching for a man in his early 20s, of average height and stocky build.

as its outrageous that elderly people could possibly be treated like this
TOTAL DISRESPECT AND DISGUSTING IMHO

self gratification and mind numbing selfishness

these crimes should be punishable far more severely

that's someone's dad or granddad ffs and for a couple of quid he could have been far worse even killed
as it stands his injuries are still beyond a joke
not just physically but mentally too at that age its bad enough without being shitting yourself to go out .

what state of mind is supposed to make this shit even thinkable i am at a loss to fathom

Who see that program last night on TV called mugged. I just can not believe in this day and age that people are still getting mugged in broad daylight and the mugger's when caught still get minimum punishment.
The girl fell off her pushbike when the muggers on a moped snatched her bag from her, when she fell off she banged her head on the curb, resulting in, ambulance, hospital, coma, brain damage.
The scumbag that done it got caught, got sentenced to 4 years (in his hotel) served 2 years and probably now back on the street being a scumbag again, the girl's life is wrecked for ever.
Over here where we live it?s very rare, it does happen but on a very very small scale compared to the UK & the reason is because they still dish out the punishment here, if you do a mugging you get caught, you get held on remand in the same jail as the convicted criminals until your court hearing. The system is very slow over here so you could be doing 6-12 months BEFORE you even get to court, then when you get sentenced and you get for example 3 years you will serve your time, threes no, get 3 years and be out in 18 months + the jails over here are jails they are not hotel rooms where you have your own things + TV?s and play stations, it?s a jail cell and no one wants to be in one.
The police here have also got power they can and they will get their nightstick out and use it on you if you don?t do what they say, they don?t tell you 3,4,5 times, they tell you once and once only. People will also stand their ground against muggers and the like, people will step in and help and if need be & give whoever a good seeing to while waiting for the police and are not scared to do so. The UK system has got to changed the Authorities need to get power back and teach these scumbags that they are not in control, set an example and sentence the next one to 15 years and the next one and the next one and when word get out the that the last 3 scumbags got 15 years for mugging someone it?ll start slowing them down
