Panorama special Undercover Care: The Abuse Exposed

Abuse at leading care home leads to police inspections of private hospitals
Staff suspended from a Castlebeck care unit after footage shows patients being kicked, slapped and drenched with cold water.

A scene from the Panorama special Undercover Care: The Abuse Exposed, showing an incident between a resident and care worker.

The chief executive of the company, Castlebeck, said he was ashamed of what had gone on at the unit, near Bristol. Thirteen employees have been suspended and a police investigation is under way.

Care services minister Paul Burstow said that he was shocked by the revelations and had authorised a series of random, unannounced inspections of similar units by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the sector regulator which has itself apologised for failing to act on earlier tip-offs about the Castlebeck facility.

Critics of the government's controversial NHS reforms will seize on the implications of the case for the proposal to allow "any qualified provider" to supply healthcare in the same way as in social care, where private companies and charities dominate the market.

Have just watched this with other half and I can honestly say I've never been so angry and ashamed watching a programme in my life. I'm still reeling from what I have just witnessed.
Be warned it's hard to watch in parts.

its even worse when you consider how much money these care homes are paid to 'look after' the residents..
my wife has worked in care homes all her adult life.. she cannot watch anything like this as it upsets her too much.
        Fave replies from various threads

Sometimes it seems that cruel, sadistic people are attracted to working with the vulnerable in the same way paedophiles are attracted to working with kids.

These insensitive, loutish "carers" should be stamped out of society.

I've worked in a number of residential care homes, never seen anything even remotely like this.

By far the most twisted shit ive ever clapped eyes on and i hope that not only do these ~~~~ers wind up in a pound me in the ass prison, but that the regulators get the sack and the entire policies get overhauled.

In Scotland we are regulated by the "Care Commission."
Every home i worked in got audited fairly frequently, that's not my issue. what my issue IS, is that they announce their visits, EVERY time we had an audit we had advanced warning.
Sometimes up to a WEEK in advance!

Nothing seriously dodgy was ever going on, but it always struck me as funny that they didn't just show up every so often for a spot check.

There was a resident we had whom was prone to violent outbursts, ex military, heavy Alzheimer's and the only way he would respond to anyone was through "harsh language"
Treat him all nicey nicey and you wound up more often than not wearing a table and other residents getting injured in the cross fire.
The only way he would respond was to get sworn at, "here [redacted] SIT THE ~~~~ DOON!" and he'd smile at you, sit down and behave civilized.
"Oh come on, please sit down [redacted]" and he'd go apeshit.
Dunno why, i can speculate that he was having flashbacks and that the startling language kicked him back to reality, but id only be guessing, i honestly will never know.

To the care commissions credit, whilst having an audit he began to kick off and i started swearing and shouting.
they where on me like white on rice.
Hauled into the back office and tore a new one, which is to their credit, how it should be.
              I explained the score.
              They disagreed.
I told them to wait until he kicked off again, usually 45mins or so. Then show me how they would approach the situation.
To the woman's credit she did.
Instead of an on the spot dismissal he gave me the time of day and the benefit of the doubt.

He started up, she approached him all nicey nicey and sure enough he picked up his chair and tossed it at her, missed her and injured up another resident.

I shouted, "wind it in ya eejit!" he smiled the same old awkward slightly embarrassed smile and sat back on his arse.

I didn't get sacked after that
Never had to physically or chemically restrain anyone, a watchful eye, a little understanding and treating people like basic ~~~~ing human beings always worked.
If you ever need to hurt someone then your doing it all wrong and you deserve to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Always treat people like they're family members and you never go far wrong, after all how would you like someone to treat your brother, sister, mum or dad?

I can't believe how many people were aware and not one did a single thing, what sort of animals feel the need to torture defenceless people like that. Fair play to the guy that reported it, shame no one listened to him.

Looks like none of the idiots where really trained, that one guy was a Kitchen Porter...
Although I've never needed the money bad enough to NOT to rock the boat if shits not right.
All I'll say is they best all be banged up.
Hell if you got caught treating livestock like that you would get the jail, so for humans they had better be locked up tighter than a nuns snatch.

Nearly had me in tears when the Simone kid told her parents an they where like "Aye right hen, yer at it."

Better be serious prison sentences handed out or I'm tooling up with some pliers and a blow torch and going asshole hunting.

Care homes are one thing the Government should run and fund. You will never find a poor care home owner. When you look at the cost of caring for an elderly person for a week it's extortionate.

My niece is a Chartered Accountant and has 3 care homes on her books. She wouldn't go into too much detail but she said they could buy a new home every year with the dividends etc they pay the Directors.

I was in tears watching this, can't remember being so disgusted or angry watching a tv programme before. I hope everyone of those heartless bastards is made to suffer in the same way some of those helpless, vulnerable people were.

As a grown man, this programme brought a tear to my eye last night. Its times like this we should bring back the stocks, allow mob justice and bring back the hang man. All 3 together would not be enough for this scum.

I know the three man were the bad guys but the owner and the managers were been told of this abuse by the families for years and they did not take action and one of the family asked the panorama to investigate the abuse when it came to light therefore the managers should also be jailed for not investigating, they should also be jailed for 5 years or even more.
