    ?80 a year...

...the price we're paying to park without the right change

You only want to park for a short period but you don?t have the right change for the pay and display machine ? and so you pay more than necessary.

Congratulations ? you have just contributed to an astonishing ?2.4billion a year overspend by the nation?s motorists, a survey has revealed.

This equates to an average overpayment of ?1.51 per driver per week - or nearly ?80 a year - said the study by Direct Line.

Overpay and display: British motorists are contributing towards an astonishing ?2.4bn overspend on payment for parking

Typically, a motorist might only want a one-hour ticket for 60p, but ends up paying ?1 for two hours instead because the only change to hand is a pound coin.

More than half of drivers (56 per cent) regularly pay for more parking time than they need, said the insurer which questioned more than 1,300 motorists.

Young drivers are the worst. The typical 18 to 24-year-old overpays by ?2.22 a week.

Older motorists are better prepared and are more likely to take the right change with them.

London sees the biggest overpayments ? an average of ?2.79 a week.

Women overpay more than men ? ?1.57 per week for the average female motorist compared with ?1.46 a week for the male.

The number of pay and display machines has soared in recent years, with them being used not just by councils and hospitals, but also by shopping centres.

The survey concluded that 1.4billion hours of parking a year is paid for without being used.

Direct Line spokesman Frances Browning said: ?Wasting ?1.51 a week doesn?t sound like a big price to pay for peace of mind for an individual.

?But when you work out how much drivers as a whole are wasting it adds up to a mind- boggling ?2.4billion which could surely go to a better use.?

She added: ?Safe and secure car parks are important for drivers and it is quite right that motorists have to pay.

It?s just a pity that so much money is being wasted on parking that is never used.

?It is another financial strain on already hard-pressed motorists when their budgets are already under pressure.?

A solution is in sight however as an increasing number of car parks now accept credit and debit cards.

A solution maybe at hand but they will still round off your payment to the next hour not the nearest hour so we will all still over pay and how many people pay for two hours when one will do.......in fear of the dreaded warden and a sixty pound fine.......me thinks they have us all by the balls

I work in London sometimes and most meters in the centre are now pay by phone only. There are no cash parking meters.

Also the new pay via mobile with a swipe should mean less need to coins.
