Homes: Welcome to Doune. Population, 8

What is it like to live in a Scottish wilderness, with just three other families as neighbours? Ghastly isolation, or blissful tranquillity?

Doune is all the more lovely for being so hard to reach. The quickest way is a 40-minute boat ride from Mallaig ? a small town perched on the tip of the mainland, 150 miles from Glasgow. Or you could drive the length of the Knoydart peninsula, one of Europe's last remaining wildernesses, leave your car at the top of a hill and pick your way down a path to the sea.

Four families live in this secluded spot. It is impossibly beautiful: a sheltered harbour with a shingle beach and a clutch of houses nestled on the shore. Stags roam freely, nibbling on the pansies, seals bob in the water and the sky is vast.

But the beauty, peace and remoteness make up for any discomfort. "You become part of the place," Martin says. "We make enough to survive, but no more. It's a living, in that it enables us to live here."

Would you like to live in this remotes places, no doctors surgery, no school, no pubs, etc.

Tools owned: Hammer, Chisel, Crowbar, Punch, Chainsaw, Cutter and Brain!!!

Did you know People will question all the good things they hear about you but believe all the bad without a second thought.

Probably not, but I can appreciate why some people would.

Pure paradise. No scum for neighbours, junkies and alcoholics begging for money for FOOD. Amazing scenery and if there is a medical emergency you get airlifted out by helicopter and straight to the front of the queue for treatment. No waiting 5 hrs in A+E whilst the nurses treat Joe Public for dandruff etc.

I think you need to have lived in a big city to really appreciate it though. There's plenty of small villages around the West Coast of Scotland with loads to offer especially if you've young kids. Take a trip out to the Western Isles and you'll see unspoilt villages with no graffiti or spoilt brats complaining they're bored as they are part of the community and help out their families. That said the drug scum are starting to make in roads and also a few from the Cities are moving in and bringing their issues with them.

why do you copy and paste so much shite from newspapers
this isnt news, who gives a ~~~~,,apart from snowy
there isnt one positive that i can see from living in a town with 8 or so inhabitants,,apart from isolating yourself away from civilisation
wherever you live on the mainland you will always have good and bad, this has been the case from the birth of civilisation, running away dont solve shite,,we need to work together to make our towns and villages a better place to live,,just putting up and shutting up or running away is the main cause of it never being addressed
how about some self penned posts jumbe

It would be a nice place to escape to, but I don't think I could live there full time.
I like my modern comforts like broadband, mobile phone, parmo, etc.

It would be a good place to go to re-find yourself. We don't realize how dumbed down we've become and the main culprip is the media.
But I think that after two weeks I'd be wanting back to the humdrum.

One of the best places I lived was in Wainwright in Alberta Canada. A one horse town where everyone knew each other and looked after each other. You couldn't fart without someone knowing. I'd spend 6 months there then go to Washington state for the 6 months of the winter. I could leave my house open and when I returned the neighbours would have been in and sorted the house out. Turn on the water, fire up the heating etc. You could have more friends in one street than most people have in their town nowadays.
