Has UK gov lost the census to Lulzsec?

The UK's Office and National Statistics and Lockheed Martin are racing to check if hacker group LulzSec has gotten its hands on this year's census data.

Such a massive data loss would be embarrassing even for a government with such an amazing record of data protection failures.

LulzSec's Twitter page has no mention of the supposed hack, but a message on PasteBin - which is open to anyone - suggests they have obtained the records.

    The message said:

    Greetings Internets,

We have blissfully obtained records of every single citizen who gave their records to the security-illiterate UK government for the 2011 census We're keeping them under lock and key though... so don't worry about your privacy (...until we finish re-formatting them for release)

The group have denied the claim

The census is a joke anyway lads because its just away to find you...... Theys say its covered by the dpa (data protection act) but its not because they sell the information to the likes of friends reunited and other sites like that... which makes them more rich

"The personal information of millions of members of the public may now be at risk.

"If these rumours are proved to be correct, it will demonstrate that each and every one of the promises made by the Office of the National Statistics about the safety and security of their databases were entirely bogus."

I wouldn't trust the UK government with the pin code for my remote control never mind anything else.

Governments and computers don't mix well....

Still waiting for my visit from the non-compliance thugs.

If this is confirmed it gives everyone a legitimate reason not to fill it in.
