Middle class face ?35,000 bill to help pay for care in their old age

The middle classes should pay the first ?35,000 of their old age care and be encouraged to take out insurance to cover that cost, according to a government-commissioned review into the future funding of social care to be published next week.

The proposal will ignite the "death tax" row that led to a war of words between the Tories and the Labour government before the last election.

Currently, social care provided by councils is means tested. If someone needs residential care and has more than ?23,250 in savings, capital or assets they have to pay for their care in full. Under the Dilnot proposals, there would be greater investment and, it is believed, a more generous means test that would make more people eligible for cover from the state. However, those with better than modest assets ? the middle classes ? would be required to cover costs. The amount they would need to pay would be capped, which, it is believed, would encourage insurers to offer cover.

"This is a big test for David Cameron. If he fails to rise to this challenge, he will let down older people now and in the generations to come."

This will go the same way as car insurance............
You pay the money in and when you need to claim,
they find a way of not paying out.

I agree with Bobwill. Labour and the Union cronies screwed this country. Labour with their borrowing to keep the Unions happy and the Unions for fighting to implement rights that protected the lazy just as much as the hard working. No wonder Multi National companies move oversees when people who are shi@ at their jobs get compensation when their fired. Health and Safety rules that restrict working practices. Bring back the days when you turned up to work.

The country is ~~~~ed big time its a ticking time bomb

we are over bloated with government workforce mailnly labours fault

we have dwindling private sector to pay for everything

people are living longer so need more benefit more hospital beds more medicene more pensions ect ect its a vicious circle

hopefully i will be dead before the full country caves in on itself its living way beyond its means

and to all these teachers and whatever bleating on about pay ect where the ~~~~ do you want it too come from

get on the dole you will cost the country less than your alreaday bloated pay packets

?65 jobseekers is much less tax burden on the country than full teacher wage

sack the ~~~~in lot of em kids are thicker than ever anyway kids round my way can barely read and write ask them to tell the time their ~~~~ed

mcdonalds is full of ~~~~in halfwit students who look like they have been lobotomised if they are the future of the nation we are all doomed

take my advice emigrate cos there will be nothing great about britain very soon

I'd love to emigrate to some of the Countries that I've lived in, but luckily for those Countries their Government has protected the trades for their own people. Almost every trade requires a Countryman certificate or a Licence which you can only get through studying at their Colleges. Shame our Government never brought more licensing in.
