Man fined after returning more than ?10,000 in cash

You'd think that finding more than ?10,000 in cash, in a bag next to a cash machine, and returning it to its rightful owners would be applauded. But for one man, all that it resulted in was a ?300 fine.

Robert Adams, 54, saw the bag full of money next to a cash machine with Chase Bank's logo on the side. Instead of taking advantage, the resident of Arlington Heights, Illinois, returned it to the bank in question.

Adams found the large sum of cash on the night of 6 June while using an ATM inside the shop Walgreens. He had planned to meet a woman for a date, but when she failed to show decided to buy a drink before heading home.

Instead of handing in the money in the area where he found it, Adams took it to a police station nearer to his home where he said he felt more comfortable speaking to local police in familiar surroundings.

Those who fined this guy are very stupid, they have send the wrong signal, next time let this kind of money come into my hand and lets see if I will return it for them to even fine me, sometimes I say you must always not be honest, I did mention when I was in a similar position not even a thank you, from that day I made my mind up that honesty is not the right thing any more.

You missed out some important information in your copy and paste.

The $500 fine was imposed for lying in a police report.

"But thinking it would result in fewer questions, Adams told the bank and the police that he'd found the money near his home not in the shop."

As Kalipo said I will go 100% with you, it does not matter were you got the money from, but if nara you missed were it says he went in the pub got few pints into him and he could only remember were he found the money, but returning the money for just being a good citizen to the police and not to some ****s living money lying down on the floor.

Theft is defined as the intention to deprive the rightful owner - nothing else. Break-ins, guns etc would be totally seperate offences.

So, under any normal definition, finding a bag of money and deciding to keep it is theft. If this guy has taken the cash and 'later' got cold feet and handed it back it doesn't really affect the original crime although i'm sure it would classed as a 'mitigating' circumstance in any prosecution (hence the fine rather than jail).

From what I read of the above story, that would be my interpretation of whats happened here.

                    It's certainly a possible scenario.

His excuse for lying about where he found the money certainly seems weak.
